"Janina!" A cold voice suddenly called out from behind her.
Janina turned to see her former adoptive mother, Genevieve. Standing beside her was Brooke.
This was the first time the two families had met since the daughters were returned to their biological parents.
Ethan and Grace saw Brooke as well.
Grace was about to say hello, but the icy look in Brooke's eyes stopped her.
There wasn't a shred of thanks for all the years they'd brought her up, nothing but a cold, superior sneer.
Janina simply offered a cool acknowledgment. "Mrs. Gable."
"Mom, Dad, let's go," Janina said, not wanting to waste her time on the Gables. She took Grace's arm to lead her away.
"Stop right there, Janina. I raised you for over twenty years. Is this how you treat me?" Genevieve was displeased with Janina's attitude.
She glanced at Grace and noticed her legs were fine.
After a moment of shock, a flicker of malice crossed her eyes.
But so what? She was still just a broke country bumpkin.
Teetering on her sky-high heels, Genevieve lifted her chin haughtily and approached the three of them, her right hand toying with the large pearl necklace around her neck.
"Well, well, Grace. It's been a while. Your legs are all better? You actually look like a person when you're not limping."
Her gaze shifted to Ethan, and she flinched slightly when she met his sharp, hostile eyes.
It had only been a few months, but Ethan's eyes were healed too.
She remembered how decisively Ethan had rejected her for Grace all those years ago. The resentment and anger that had simmered for over two decades boiled over in that moment.
All Genevieve felt now was pure hatred for Ethan and Grace.
"And Ethan's not blind anymore. Your family must have gotten shit-lucky. But, ha, that doesn't change the fact that you still look like paupers."
