"Brainless idiot. So what if she's from a rich family? She's still a moron!" Yvonne thought.
Janina Holt, who had witnessed the entire exchange, was thoroughly enjoying herself.
She and her parents had been shopping in the store next door to Brooke's.
Brooke's shrill voice had carried easily, and Janina had overheard her entire conversation with Yvonne.
Watching Yvonne's glamorous figure disappear, Janina turned to Ethan and Grace. "That's her. That's Yvonne, the woman who ruined my marriage."
Janina had been open with her parents about her marital problems, telling them the whole story about her and Julius Aurelius over the New Year holiday.
Grace and Ethan Holt had only heard Yvonne's name; they had never seen her before.
Seeing her now, Grace remarked thoughtfully, "She certainly has a face that men would find attractive. But the failure of your marriage isn't entirely her fault. If Julius truly loved you, not even a goddess from heaven could have tempted him."
As if trying to console her daughter, Grace patted Janina's hand. "He's not a good person. If it wasn't Yvonne, another woman would have come along. So, Nina, you're lucky you're free of him now."
Janina's eyes lit up. Her mother's understanding of marriage was exactly the same as her own. Like mother, like daughter.
Ethan chimed in. "Your mother's right. When a man decides to cheat, he'll invent any excuse. A man like that isn't worth remembering. But there are still good men in the world. For example, me."
Grace shot him a look. "You're so full of yourself!"
Janina laughed. "It's true, though. My dad is the best man in the world."
Suddenly, Janina remembered something and told them about how she'd accidentally overheard Genevieve admitting to switching her and Brooke at birth when she was at the Gable family's home.
Grace was stunned, as if she'd been struck by lightning. She stood frozen in place. All this time, she had believed it was a hospital mix-up, that she had accidentally taken the wrong baby home. She had never imagined that Genevieve had deliberately switched the two children as an act of revenge.
Furious, Grace wanted to call the police and have Genevieve arrested on the spot.
"That's fine," Janina said. "We're just here to eat. Tell him not to worry about us and just focus on the restaurant."
The waiter handed them the menus, and Janina let her parents order first.
When she looked at the menu after they were done, she saw they had ordered all of her favorite dishes: Bouillabaisse, herb-steamed pork ribs with lemon butter sauce, spicy grilled calamari with garlic aioli and creamy potato leek soup.
A warmth spread through Janina's chest. Her parents remembered everything she liked to eat.
"Nina, don't have too much of the braised pork," Grace reminded her gently. "It's too rich. It's not good for the babies. Just a little taste to satisfy your craving."
"Okay, I know."
Janina's appetite had been excellent lately. She wasn't a picky eater, but she had a particular craving for spicy food, though she knew she couldn't overdo it.
Grace worried that Janina would get hungry at night, so she always made sure to prepare a late-night snack for her in advance.
