The next day at noon, the four members of 'The Graces' Chat' managed to get together for a small gathering. To make things easier for Janina, they chose a place near Crystal Springs.
Janina was the first to arrive, and Wendy Clifford was the last.
As soon as Wendy sat down, Maggie asked, "So, what's the situation with Baron Clifford?"
This was the main reason for their meeting today.
For a while, Wendy had completely ignored Baron. No matter how much their mother cried and pleaded, Wendy's response was always the same: "Whether he lives or dies is none of my business."
It wasn't that she was heartless, but Baron's behavior had been so atrocious that she wished she didn't have a brother at all.
But then she went home and saw her father. His hair had turned white, and he seemed to have aged a decade overnight. She couldn't bear to watch him work himself to death at a construction site just to pay off Baron's debts.
This quiet man, who had always silently provided for their family, cried in front of her for the first time.
He told her not to worry, to live her own life, and that he would handle Baron's problems.
In the end, Wendy relented.
Although her mother had always favored Baron, her father had never asked her for anything for him.
Wendy took a sip of her juice before answering Maggie. "What else could I do? I gave him one hundred twenty thousand dollars to pay off a year's worth of his mortgage. He's arranged a new payment plan with the bank and promised to pay on time from now on."
Melody Leigh shook her head. "It would be great if he's really turned over a new leaf. Then your money wouldn't have been for nothing."
Janina remembered Wendy mentioning that Baron had also taken out high-interest online loans. "How much does he still owe on those loans?" she asked.
Wendy understood her friends' concerns. "He's an adult," she said with a sigh. "I can't watch him twenty-four seven. This is his last chance."
As she spoke, her expression grew cold. "If he messes up again, I swear I'll take a knife to him myself!"
Joking aside, they had to face reality. It would be for the best if Baron had truly learned his lesson this time.
"Has Baron found a job?" Janina asked.
"He has. It pays eighty hundred a month, but with overtime and bonuses, it comes out to about ten thousand." Baron had been unemployed for over a year. Wendy had pulled some strings to find him a job in Portsborough that matched his skills.
Baron had dropped out of middle school to start working, so he didn't have a diploma and had to learn a trade. He had become a skilled machinist and was considered an expert in his field. His new boss was an acquaintance of Wendy's.
