Everything had been going well until a new manager arrived two weeks ago, and suddenly Marjorie found herself being pushed out.
Marjorie wasn't particularly competent; she had gotten into a cushy department with little work and good pay through her connections. Everyone knew about her relationship with Clark, so they usually went out of their way to be nice to her.
But her new boss was strict and had no patience for Marjorie's special treatment. No one was allowed to leave until their work met her high standards.
Marjorie got chewed out by the manager a couple times, so she went to Clark to vent. But he just brushed her off and told her to watch and learn from the new boss.
They argued about it and had been giving each other the silent treatment for days.
Marjorie hadn't gone to work for a few days, waiting for Clark to come and say sorry.
But she waited almost a whole week without getting a single text from him.
Sensing something was wrong, Marjorie tried to contact Clark herself but couldn't reach him.
Not only that, but all the credit cards Clark had given her were declined.
Marjorie had to ask their mutual friends to find out what was going on.
She learned that Clark's parents had sent him away to some remote village in the middle of nowhere. The place was isolated, with no cell service.
They had even hired people to watch him, giving him just enough food to get by each day.
And they had issued an ultimatum: if Clark didn't change his ways, he could forget about ever coming back.
As for where he was, no one knew.
The reason? Clark and a group of friends had gotten into a brawl at a bar and were arrested.
His parents had to spend a good deal of money to bail him out, but Clark, ever loyal to his friends, wanted to take more money to get his buddies out too.
His parents thought he was an idiot. He had no real skills, couldn't pick a decent woman, and even his friends were bad news. So, without a second thought, they shipped him off to the countryside.
Marjorie panicked. Her entire lifestyle depended on Clark.
Without Clark, her job was gone, her high salary was gone, and her free credit cards were gone.
In Abigail's view, her daughter was attractive and didn't have to be with Clark.
Sure, Clark was well-off, but his parents looked down on Marjorie, which was why they still weren't married.
As a man, Clark could afford to wait, but Marjorie couldn't.
A woman's youth is fleeting.
If Clark never married her and just kept leading her on, Marjorie's future would be ruined.
It was better for Marjorie to break things off with Clark now.
A good woman would have no trouble dating a good man. She was confident her daughter could find someone a hundred times better than Clark.
"I know." Marjorie rolled over, scrolling through videos on her phone with her back to Abigail.
"I'm already looking for a job."
