While the Sullivan family was going through hell, the Holt family was on a winning streak.
Natalie had earned her bachelor's degree and was now preparing for graduate school. In her spare time, she was studying makeup artistry, believing that an extra skill meant another path in life.
She was still working at the jewelry store but would be resigning next month to open her own makeup studio.
As she was organizing her makeup kit for work, West walked up to her and jutted out his chin. "I bought a new car. I'll take you all for a spin later."
"Really? What kind?" Natalie's eyes lit up, and she put down her makeup bag.
"A domestic SUV. It's spacious, perfect for the family," West said, unable to hide his excitement.
Grace, emerging from the kitchen, overheard the conversation and turned to Ethan, who was reading the newspaper.
"Did you hear that? Our boy bought a car. He's doing so well with his career."
Ethan looked up, a slight smile on his face. "That's great. But his driving skills…"
“Dad, you’re selling me short,” West jumped in. “I’ve had my license for five years. Back when I was a chef, I used to drive my boss around all the time!”
"That's right. Your father's memory is slipping; he forgot about that," Grace said, wiping her hands as she walked over.
Just then, Janina came out of the bedroom, one hand on her lower back. Her loose maternity dress couldn't hide her prominent belly.
"Congratulations, West!" she said with a yawn, her eyes already fixed on the dining table, her stomach rumbling.
Grace hurried over to help Janina to her seat.
"Sit down first, I'll get breakfast. Don't tire yourself out. Your due date is only thirty-two days away. We have to be careful."
Grace then went back to the kitchen, and West took a seat next to Janina.
"I'll take you all for a drive later. I specifically chose a model with high safety ratings. I was thinking about you being close to your due date, it'll be convenient for taking you to and from appointments."
Before Janina could reply, Natalie rushed over, having already changed her shoes.
"I'm going to be late for work. How about you pick me up tonight?"
West made an "OK" sign. "No problem."
"Don't worry, Mom. You have to trust my skills," West said earnestly.
"It's so beautiful, West! I want to sit in the front!" Janina loved the model too. It was spacious and comfortable.
The passenger seat could be adjusted, and she needed to recline.
Just as Janina was about to get in, she saw Marjorie walking toward them.
Marjorie was wearing a pale yellow dress and carrying a shoulder bag, walking briskly.
"Don't look, get in," West called to Janina, his voice crisp and decisive.
With his hands on the steering wheel, West stared straight ahead, not sparing Marjorie a single glance.
He wore sunglasses, and the sharp lines of his profile looked even colder in the shade.
Hearing West's voice, Janina lifted her foot and got into the passenger seat.
