It was a little hot outside, and Janina just wanted to go home and lie down.
Wendy drove Janina home, and the two of them spent the day together.
Ethan and Grace were fond of Janina's three best friends and treated them like their own family. They even had slippers and loungewear set aside for each of them.
Wendy didn't stand on ceremony; she felt completely at home there.
It was only when she was with her friends that she could truly relax.
Wendy spent the entire day chatting with Janina and keeping her company.
Grace would periodically bring them fruit and snacks.
In the evening, Ethan and Grace cooked a huge feast, filled with dishes that Janina and Wendy loved.
The couple had made a point to remember the favorite foods of their daughter's best friends.
It wasn't until eight o'clock that Wendy reluctantly left the Holt family's home.
Janina suggested Wendy take her car home, since she was so close to giving birth and wouldn't be driving for a while. It was better for Wendy to use it.
But Wendy refused. "The subway station is right downstairs from my apartment, and it takes me straight to the office. It's much more convenient than driving."
Janina didn't insist. There was no need for such formalities between them.
After Wendy left, Janina washed up and went to bed.
She felt particularly exhausted today and didn't want to move a muscle.
While Janina was sound asleep, Wendy was wandering the streets.
Instead of taking the subway, she was walking the long way home.
She envied Janina for having such wonderful parents and loving brothers.
She had noticed the way Janina's parents looked at her, their eyes filled with adoration and care.
But her own mother only ever contacted her to complain or ask for money.
Her father was a quiet, reserved man. In her childhood memories, she had never experienced the joy of being cuddled and doted on by her parents like other children.
She was so tired.
"Everyone dies eventually. Why must we endure so much suffering only to die in pain? Do we struggle to live just to experience all this pain and sorrow?" she thought.
Suddenly, it all felt so pointless.
Wendy let out a bitter laugh at herself.
Was she getting depressed? She suddenly felt a desperate urge to escape this life, which was why she had suggested to Janina today that they leave Clayborne City and settle down somewhere else.
Only when she was with her friends did she feel a glimmer of light in her bleak existence. That was when life felt meaningful.
Well, in her next life, she wouldn't ask for wealth, only for good parents, for warmth, for laughter, for acceptance, and for love. A simple, peaceful life would be enough.
Lost in thought, she didn't notice the crosswalk light change from green to red. She dazedly stepped off the curb.
After one step, she realized cars were speeding past in front of her. She quickly tried to pull her foot back, but just then, a hand grabbed her arm and pulled.
"Watch out!"
