Janina didn't know what was said on the other end of the line, but she saw Wendy's face suddenly go deathly pale. Since Wendy was still on the call, Janina couldn't ask what was wrong. Wendy's hand, gripping the phone, was trembling. She spoke into the phone with chilling calm. "I just bought a house. I don't have any savings. There's nothing I can do." With that, she hung up.
Not even three seconds later, the phone rang again. Wendy took a deep breath and ignored it. Seeing her like this, Janina had a sinking feeling she knew what was happening. "Is something wrong at home?" she asked, concerned.
Wendy squeezed the phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. The light in her eyes seemed to extinguish, and they became red and wet. A low, trembling, cold laugh escaped her lips. "Baron is in debt to loan sharks again. My mom wants me to pay it off for him."
Hearing this, Janina's expression hardened. "What... he's gambling again? Didn't you clear his debts last time? How much is it now?" That son of a bitch. Janina was speechless. Baron was a ticking time bomb, constantly throwing the family into chaos, and in the end, it was always Wendy who had to pay the price.
Ever since she'd known Wendy, Janina knew she had a family of leeches. Whenever her mother or brother contacted her, it was never good news. Mrs. Clifford doted on her son, completely disregarding her daughter's well-being. In her eyes, a daughter would just get married and become part of another family. A son was different. Not only would he carry on the Clifford family name, but they would have to rely on Baron in their old age. So, Mrs. Clifford was endlessly indulgent with him. With Baron in trouble again, it was only natural for Mrs. Clifford to call Wendy to clean up her precious son's mess. They were really pushing it.
"What are you planning to do? Are you going to pay it off for him again? Can you even afford it? Where is Baron? Where is he hiding now? Why is his phone disconnected? He can't just hide behind you two after causing such a huge mess!" Wendy's voice grew slightly agitated. She couldn't understand why, even now, her parents were still trying to save Baron.
Mr. Clifford fell silent for a moment before answering, "He changed his number. The old one is out of service. Aren't you friends with his boss? Could you ask your friend if Baron has been at work?"
