Janina, Maggie, and Melody's jaws nearly hit the floor.
The news was completely out of the blue.
Maggie was the first to speak. "Wait, aren't you worried he's scamming you? Dawnhaven is so far away. You won't know anyone there. What if something happens?"
Janina agreed with Maggie.
She also felt that Wendy's decision was far too impulsive. To move to a completely unfamiliar place for love…
People change. Love changes. She didn't want Wendy to stake her entire future on one man. If Wendy had money of her own, it would be different; at least she could live well if she left Finch. But the reality was, she had very little savings. Going to Dawnhaven alone would be incredibly difficult.
"Wendy, you need to think this through carefully. We're all happy that you've found someone you can rely on. If you were anywhere else in Valerium, we could at least know how you're doing. But in Dawnhaven, if something happens, we can't just rush over to help. What will you do by yourself?"
Wendy knew her friends meant well, and she would miss them terribly. But Finch had given up his freedom for her; she couldn't be so heartless.
"Don't worry. If things don't work out there, I'll come back. As for Finch… I just don't want to owe him too much."
Melody, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up. "You said he gave you a check for ten million. Where is it?"
"I gave it back to him. I asked him to try and renegotiate with his boss, to see if he could shorten the contract. I think ten years is too long, too."
She didn't need the check Finch had given her now anyway. She certainly wasn't going to get involved in her family's mess.
Maggie listlessly took a sip of her drink. The thought of Wendy leaving Clayborne City left a heavy feeling in her chest.
"When are you guys planning to leave? Have you booked your flights?" Janina's mood was also low. The four of them were finally going their separate ways. All their promises to grow old together seemed like bubbles, popping at the first touch of reality.
She felt her eyes begin to sting and quickly looked down at her juice to hide it from her friends.
"We leave right after New Year's."
Wendy hid the emotion in her eyes and nodded, agreeing to check on the check at the bank.
She decided it was better to be cautious. Even her own parents had been hell-bent on destroying her, so what could she expect from a man with no blood relation to her? It wasn't that she suspected Finch, but she wanted to minimize any potential harm.
