Janina threw her arms around Summer, her heart aching for her.
She was so talented, so wonderful, yet one scumbag had managed to dim all her light.
"Summer, you're wrong. You're an amazing person. Think of those unhappy experiences as stepping in dog crap. It's messy, but it doesn't change who you are. Don't you ever talk about yourself like that."
Janina gently patted Summer's back before letting her go.
"I'm divorced, and I have a child, but so what? I still believe in love. If I meet a good person, I'll cherish that chance. So please, don't shut out the good things around you. Be brave and take that first step."

After returning from Summer's, Janina pulled her brother into a room alone to probe his feelings.
From her conversation with Summer, Janina had drawn one conclusion: Summer had feelings for Easton, but she felt she wasn't worthy of him.
Her divorce and the abortion were hurdles she couldn't get over in her own mind.
When it came to relationships, Summer had very low self-esteem.
Even after realizing her own feelings, she did her best to hide them away.
She was running from them.
Seeing Janina's secretive demeanor, Easton was a bit confused.
"Nina, what is it? Is it something you can't say in front of everyone?"
Just moments ago, Janina had been praising her brother for finally showing some emotional intelligence. Now, she was taking it all back.
He knew she had been having a private chat in Summer's room; he should have guessed they were discussing personal matters. Instead of asking what she and Summer talked about, he seemed even more clueless.
Given Easton's low EQ, Janina decided there was no point in beating around the bush.
"Easton, do you like Summer?"
The question was incredibly direct.
Easton's eyes were filled with panic and confusion.
"Where... where is she moving?" he asked, his voice low and unreadable.
When he heard that Summer was moving away, Easton felt a knot tighten in his chest, making it hard to breathe.
Why was she leaving?
Was it because of him?
Easton had never felt so dejected, like a favorite toy had just been snatched away from him.
"Easton, there's no one else here. You still haven't told me if you like Summer or not. I'm just worried Mom and Dad will try to play matchmaker. They've already arranged for you to meet someone. She's coming to our house on New Year's Day. You should think carefully before you answer."
Janina said it casually, then added, "If the meeting is a success, you two will get married and have kids. Oh! Then Liam and Joy will have cousins to play with."
"I'm not meeting anyone. I'm going to tell Mom right now." Easton stood up, ready to walk out.
