As she spoke, she fought to hold back her tears, trying her best to stop crying.
Seeing her so hurt and distressed, Julius felt a pang of guilt.
Yvonne had gone abroad for his sake. After learning about his family's status, she had felt unworthy and decided to study overseas.
She had said that when she returned, she wanted to be standing at the same peak as him.
Only then would she be worthy of him.
He had tried to persuade her to stay, telling her he didn't care about any of that—her status, her education, none of it mattered. He loved her for who she was.
But Yvonne had insisted on going, and he had reluctantly agreed.
No one could have predicted that shortly after she left, news would spread that she had a new boyfriend.
In a fit of anger, he had accepted the advances of Janina, who had been pursuing him relentlessly.
Later, he heard from mutual friends that Yvonne had gotten married. He was 24 that year.
So, on the very same day Yvonne got married, he married Janina.
His feelings for Janina were complicated.
He had never taken her seriously before; she was just a woman he used to spite Yvonne, a woman he thought he could never love.
But he was wrong.
Without even realizing it, he had fallen in love with Janina.
And just at that moment, Yvonne had sent him a message, pleading for help. She was pregnant, her husband was abusing her, and she was on the verge of breaking down.
So, he had personally flown abroad to bring Yvonne back, setting her up at Solara Heights.
Since he brought her back, it was his duty to take care of her.
Julius was torn between guilt and anguish. His voice softened. "Yvonne, please don't cry. I'll take care of you. I'll make this right."
Yvonne looked at him, a flicker of pain in her eyes. Why wouldn't he answer Janina's call?
A few seconds later, the phone rang again.
Julius turned his back, walking out to the living room balcony. The incessant ringing pulled him back to reality. He didn't dare to answer.
When the ringing finally stopped, he rubbed his temples wearily.
"Why didn't you answer?" Yvonne's voice came from behind him.
Julius explained, "It was a spam call."
Yvonne didn't call him out on the lie. She knew it was Janina, calling to rush him to city hall. So she said gently,
"You should take it. It might be something important from the office."
Playing the part of the understanding woman, Yvonne turned away. "I'm going to take a shower. You didn't get much sleep last night either after all that... exertion. You should rest here for a bit before you go to the office."
