Chapter 47

Chapter 47

“So, tonight is going to be the best night of your life.” Christy said after sitting down at our table, she was still licking off some salt from her hand.

“What’s happening tonight?” I asked, trying to swallow some food through the lump in my throat. My mind was still abuzz with Andrew and how he simply vanished without a word. My fingers momentarily touched my lips, remembering the phantom of his kiss. “A party?”

“Not just any party.” Christy squeals, pulling her seat closer to us. “It’s the Bachelorette Party.”

“Tonight is usually when people start to choose from their potentials. It’s the time when gifts are given, proposals of love are brought out and, you know, where everyone is preparing for the Choosing.” Kelcey explains, making my stomach drop as I get another reminder that I was running out of time. “The School of Love do these Bachelor and Bachelorette parties for our last hoorah as singles.”

“It’s fun. The absolute best, I promise you.” Christy places her hands above her heart, looking dreamy. “The girls always get a little crazy and at night after we have all drank our weight in liquor and have eaten enough dick pops, we get to meet with boys who are equally smashed and it’s just so much fun because everyone’s a little drunk and excited and handsy.”

“Not the best way to meet your future mate, but most people find their ‘forever’ at the end of the party.” Kelcey says with a yawn as she leans back in her seat.

Christy happily agrees. “People like to profess their love when they’re drunk out of their mind and slightly desperate.”

I sure was slightly desperate.

More than slightly actually.

With the Choosing so close, I had no one.

Jeff was out of the picture and I would much rather suffer all my life than go home with him.

Benedict has basically confirmed that nothing would ever happen to us.

And then there is Andrew, who I am not so sure of. He said he wanted to choose me, that he wanted but hasn’t really done anything to prove his words especially after he just left me with Benedict.

“Look,” Kelcey pointed towards the water where a few couples lingered. “Everyone’s already starting to pair up!”

And she was right.

At least half of the attendees were along the lake, professing their feelings for each other and although I was happy for all of them… I was also feeling very alone and more than that, I felt like a failure.

I was about to tell Kelcey this when I caught sight of Benedict not too far away by the lake. He was against a tree as well, looking at the water. A girl was in front of him, clutching her gift in her hands as she no doubt professed her love for him.

But he wasn’t paying attention.

His eyes focused everywhere but on her.

She was talking, asking a question by the expression on her face, but Benedict didn’t respond.

Seconds passed and he has still not said a word. He wasn’t even looking at her. The girl started blinking tears away from her eyes until she was bawling. With a hiccup, she turns away from him, her gift ruined as she held it so tightly.

He does not watch her go, still barely acknowledging that he was with someone in the first place.

As if sensing me looking, he glanced in my direction. Despite yet another girl trying to get his attention, he abandons her to approach me.

But just before he could come close enough to speak, he stopped, his eyes flickering behind me almost in horror. I don’t get to look back because a man with a wide smile, as wide as the lake even, makes me freeze.

Chapter 47 Jeff.

And despite my obvious distaste for him, Jeff went right for it. “Vareesa, come with me.”

I didn’t have to think about it. “No.”

As he was my best friend, he knew the right way to get me to listen. “Yes. You will. You have to at least hear me out. For your father. Let’s not joke around anymore, Vareesa, the School of Love is ending soon.”

It was.

I was running out of time.

“Then talk.” I say flatly.

Christy and Kelcey both looked at me before turning away to give us privacy.

Jeff doesn’t beat around the bush. “Unlike the rest of them, you only have this year to make it right to the pack and your father. You already know this but coming back unmated, a failure, will only make it hard on literally everyone. To the Alpha that paid so much to get you here and who will work harder just to continue to feed you for the rest of your life and to your father who will have to work more just to help the Alpha. You know I am your only option. You know I am all you have. And we both know that you love them more than you love yourself. So stop playing and making it harder on yourself. I am all you have.”

I hate to admit it, especially to him.

But he was right.

What was I thinking… I can’t come home a failure. I can’t let everyone suffer because of me.

I had no one.

Literally there was no one but Jeff.

And I just know he won’t even make that easy for me.

But maybe… maybe there’s still a chance.

Maybe Andrew…
