NERO POV

The palace gates opened.

Where the fuck is everyone?” Abel muttered behind me. “You’ve been missing for hours. This should be chaos.”

He was right.

There should have been search parties. Advisors scrambling. My mother screaming orders.

“Good question.”

Abel moved closer. “There should be hundreds of guards searching for you. The whole pack should be mobilized.”

“But they’re not.” I said quietly.

Fifty guards stood in formation. Weapons at their sides. Faces blank.

They looked terrified.

“This doesn’t feel right. Abel muttered beside me.

He was right. It didn’t.

We entered the throne room and there she was.

Mother. Standing beside MY throne.

And Kade. His hand resting on the armrest like he belonged there.

Everyone in the room was shivering. Shaking. Keeping their eyes down.

What the fuck had happened while I was gone?

“Nero.” Mother’s voice. Sweet. Fake. “You’re back. We were just about to send a search party.”

Kade’s hand stayed on the throne. Didn’t move.

I walked forward slowly. Every step deliberate. Loud in the silent room.

“Kade,” I said. Voice cold as ice. “Don’t touch my throne. Even in my absence.”

He jerked his hand away like it burned him.

He pulled his hand back like he’d been burned. “I’m sorry, brother. I was just-”

“Just what?”

“Holding the fort.” He stepped away. “I would have come to search for you myself but someone had to stay. Someone had to lead.”

I sat on my throne. Looked at him. Let the silence stretch,

“Of course,” I said finally. “Thank you for your service, Second.”

“I did.”

“Your wife?” She laughed. Bitter. “She’s your burden. Your curse. That girl should be in a dungeon not standing in my throne

room.”

“Guards.” she said without looking away from me. “Take the girl. Put her in the cells until we can decide what to do with her.”

Two guards stepped forward.

I didn’t move. Just spoke.

“If any of you takes one step toward her,” I said quietly. Deadly. “our legs will hang as decoration in this room. And I’ll make you watch while I do it.“.

They froze.

“Nero,” my mother said. “Don’t be foolish. She’s dangerous-”

“She’s mine.” I walked down the steps. Slowly. “And anyone who touches what’s mine answers to me.”

“Do not talk to your mother like that,” a voice said from the side.

My mother’s twin sister stepped forward. My aunt Victoria. She looked exactly like my mother but harder. Colder.

“Remember she still holds one third of the power from the seats my aunt continued. “She’s very powerful even if you’re the true alpha.”

“Is that a threat?” I asked.

Abel moved up beside me. “Okay this is getting serious.”

“Brother,” Kade touched my arm.

I looked at his hand. Then at him.

“Who is your alpha, Kade?” I asked. Loud enough for everyone to hear. “Her? Or me? Your brother? Who do you owe your loyalty to?”

The room held its breath.

Kade’s face was carefully blank.

“You,” he said finally. Quiet. “Always you.”

I let the silence stretch. Let everyone see him submit.

Then nodded once.

“OUT” The word echoed. “Before I forget I’m supposed to be civilized.”

They scrambled. All of them. Rushing for the doors.

Remi moved to follow.

“Not you,” I said without looking. “Abel. Take Remi to my chambers.”

“Your chambers? Remi’s voice. Shocked.

I turned. Looked at her. Saw the blood on her neck from Mothers claws.

“Or would you prefer to go where Aunt is going?” I asked. “To be punished for your escape?”

She swallowed. “I’ll go with Abel.”

Smart girl.

Abel led her out. But not before giving me a look that said: Don take too long.

The doors closed.

I waited counting to ten. Making sure they were really gone.

And Kade LAUNCHED himself at me and Hugged me so hard tumbled.

I started laughing too. Couldn’t help it.

“You sold it perfectly,” I said. Pulling back. “The throne touch. The apology. The submission. All of it.”
