CHAPTER 111

GABRIELLE’S POV

I felt my heart drop.

Damon was staring directly at me, his expression flat. To others, he might look bored and unbothered, but I knew what that look in his eyes meant.

As if I weren’t already in enough trouble, Rhys raised his hand and waved. Hi, brother. It’s great to have you visit us for once. Did you miss me?

I turned to him. Cut that out.

He smirked, his eyes still on Damon. I’ll return your wife in one piece when I’m done, okay?

Damon’s eyes moved to him and his fist clenched by his side but he didn’t move or even speak.

The scarred man laughed. Oh, your husband doesn’t look so happy, sweet thing.

Before I could even react, Rhys had landed a punch on the scarred man’s nose, and I heard a loud crack.

The scarred man groaned, holding his bleeding nose. Shit!

“What the fuck?I asked, my eyes widening.

Rhys wiped the blood on his knuckles with the scarred man’s shirt. Relax, love. Vani should be thanking me. If it were Damon he’d cut off his tongue and probably feed it to him for calling you sweet thing.

My jaw dropped. Still, you didn’t have to break his nose. A few words of warning would have sufficed.

I walked back to the desk and picked up my purse.

Rhys shrugged. “We do things differently around here. I’ll take you downstairs.

He walked out of the room and I followed after giving Vani an apologetic look.

Of all the days I should have worn a sixinch heel, it shouldn’t have been on the day I needed to run as fast as humanly possible.

We passed the living area but this time, the men around kept their eyes down. I knew it had something to do with Rhys’s presence and maybe Vani had told them about me.

Rhys unlocked the gate with a code and held it open for me. It was nice having you around, sisterinlaw. Maybe one day we could be friends.

I nodded at him. Maybe. Bye.

Then I walked out of the building.

My eyes met Damon as he stood beside the car but he wasn’t looking at me. He was looking behind me. I walked closer, my heart pounding in my chest.

He didn’t even spare me a glance but he opened the front passenger seat for me. Get in the car.

I swallowed. Damon-

Get in the car, Gabrielle,he said, his voice cold. Don’t make me repeat myself.

I forced back the words I wanted to say and got into the car. He shut the door after me but he didn’t get in.

He walked away, going closer to Rhys.

I hope I didn’t just make things worse between them.

DAMON’S POV

I knew something was wrong when Gabrielle went shopping at seven in the morning without Fiorella.

I confirmed it the moment I checked my pocket and found that the note containing Rhysphone number and address was missing.

I had cancelled my plans for the day to show her around and maybe take her to the house I grew up in before we moved.

Only to find out she went to see Rhys behind my back after I told her to stay away from him.

He was standing by the gate, an infuriating smile on his face. Hello, brother. Would you like to come in for tea?

I ignored his words. What did you tell her?

Oh, come on,he said, shaking his head. Lighten up, Damon. Can’t a guy catch up with his sisterinlaw?

She is not your sisterinlaw because I am not your brother,I responded. I told you to stay away, Rhys.

His smile faded slowly. I did stay away. She came to me on her own. Did you expect me to turn her away?

I didn’t hesitate. Yes.

His hand dropped from the gate. I didn’t want to hurt her or make her feel unwelcome. I have feelings, unlike you.

Rhys had always been a thorn in my side.

He was annoying, persistent, and careless. I didn’t want him around Gabrielle especially because of the kind of people he was involved with.

I exhaled, already bored with the conversation. It’s better to hurt her feelings than make her carry the weight of everything. Don’t do that to her or I’ll kill you.

I meant that.

He tilted his head slightly, smiling as if he didn’t believe me. You love me way too much to kill me, brother.

As long as you stay away I don’t care what you tell yourself,I responded calmly. What did you tell Gabrielle?

His smile disappeared slowly. I told her the reason we don’t get along.

I took a step closer and folded my fist to hit his jaw when he raised both hands.

Not the real reason,he said before I could raise my fist. The one that had to do with me showing up at your door.

I paused, then unfolded my fists and took a step back. And?

He lifted his hand to his chin, rubbing it with his eyes raised as if he were in deep thought. I told her that I made your mother depressed and then I ran away. She was also curious about what happened to you.

No one could tell Gabrielle what happened to me but me so I wasn’t worried about her curiosity.

Memories that I didn’t want to remember came rushing to me. Some of them were blurry and others were clear as if they had happened yesterday.

I willed my mind to force down the thoughts.

After seeing the effects of my father’s infidelity on my mother, I vowed that I’d never do that to any woman.

Rhys’s face was clouded with something darker now. I know I never said this, but I’m sor
