Spending the day with Lila turned out to be more fun than I expected. She was a sweet little girl, nothing like her parents.

The door opened and Susan walked in with a handful of shopping bags. George was behind her, his expression in his usual

frown.

Like boss, like butler.

Lila ran to her immediately. Susan!

Susan froze midstep, blinking in surprise before crouching down to hug her. Oh, my goodness. Lila? What are you doing here, sweetheart?

Mommy dropped me off,Lila said simply, like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Susan’s eyes widened. She what?

Anya was here,I said, standing from the couch. She said she was going on a cruise trip with some NFL player. She told me to tell Damon.

George groaned under his breath. “Of course she did.

Susan straightened, still holding Lila’s hands. Her eyes met mine, cautious but knowing. And did she say anything else?

I shrugged. She asked if I was Damon’s new bed toy. Then told me she’s his wife.”

Susan sighed. Oh, Anya. She turned to George. He’s not going to like this.

George muttered, He never likes anything.

I frowned. Soshe is his wife?

Susan hesitated, glancing toward Lila who was now humming softly to her stuffed rabbit.

It’s complicated, she said quietly. You should wait for him to explain.

Before I could respond, the sound of a car door slammed outside.

George looked toward the window. Speak of the devil

My pulse quickened.

Susan gently touched Lila’s shoulder. Sweetheart, go upstairs and wash your hands. I’ll bring you cookies.

Lila nodded and skipped away, unaware of the tension growing in the room.

And we’d give you some privacy,Susan said with a simile.

George tried to argue but she gave him a dirty look. His mouth clammed shut as he followed her out of the room.

The front door opened, and Damon stepped in, his suit jacket slung over his arm, and his phone pressed to his car.

Yes, I said close the deal before noon. I don’t care if he’s in Singapore, make it happen,he snapped, ending the call as he set his keys on the counter.

When his gaze finally lifted to me, he frowned slightly. Are you okay? You look pale.

My pulse quickened when our eyes met. The memory of my dream came flooding to me. How hot he looked lying on me, how he whispered dirty words in my ear, how his touch felt and the gasped that escaped me when he thrust inside my core.

My body itched to jump on him as he undid his cuffs casually even though I was mad at him.

Something had to be wrong with me.

I swallowed, forcing a smile. I’m fine. You justhad a visitor.

He froze. A visitor?

I nodded toward the staircase where Lila’s small pink luggage still lay by the step. Anya. And your daughter.”

For a brief moment, he said nothing. Then his jaw clenched, and that calm mask of his slipped for a heartbeat. She was here?

Yes. She dropped off Lila.”

His nostrils flared. Without telling me?”

She said you haven’t been answering her calls.

He muttered something under his breath, too low for me to catch, and undid the top buttons on his shirt.

I didn’t know,I said quietly. I didn’t know you were married, Damon. That makes our marriage automatically annulled. I’m free now.

His eyes lifted to mine. I’m not married to Anya. Not anymore.”

I stared at him, trying to process. She said she’s your wife.

She was my wife,” he corrected harshly. We’ve been divorced for five years. She likes to forget that part.

I crossed my arms. You could’ve told me.

Told you what?he asked lazily.

That you were married.

I’m not.He glanced up, his voice clipped.

My pulse quickened, but I kept my face neutral. You could’ve mentioned you had a daughter
