CHAPTER 148
GABRIELLE’S POV
His fingers tightened weakly around mine,
My breath caught.
Did I imagine that?
“Damon?”
His eyelids moved but didn’t open, and the monitor beside him began to beep faster.
“Damon, can you hear me?” I asked.
His fingers tightened again, a little stronger this time.
I stood quickly and pressed the call button on the wall.
“Doctor!” I called toward the door.
Within seconds, the door opened and two nurses rushed in, followed by the surgeon.
“What happened?” the surgeon asked.
“He moved,” I said. “His hand… he squeezed mine.”
The surgeon stepped to the side of the bed and looked at the monitor. One of the nurses checked his pulse while the other adjusted the IV.
“Mr. Gravari,” the surgeon said as she turned to him. “If you can hear me, try to open your eyes.”
His breathing changed slightly.
The nurse shone a small light onto his face. His eyelids moved again, but they didn’t open.
“He’s responding,” she said.
The surgeon nodded. “Damon, you are in the hospital. You were shot and we performed surgery. Do you understand?”
No response–just uneven breathing and fingers twitching around mine.
I tried to hold it together–I really tried–but the sight of him like that broke me.
My vision blurred as tears fell, wishing I could do something–anything–to help him.
But I just stood there helpless.
“Mrs Gravari,” the surgeon placed a hand on my shoulder. “Please, step outside for a minute.”
My head shook immediately. “No. 1–he just woke up.”

“He’s not fully conscious yet,” she said gently. “We need space to examine him properly. And we probably have to sedate him.”
My fingers tightened around Damon’s hand instinctively. His grip tightened but unmistakable.
The surgeon noticed.
“That’s good,” she said. “It means he can hear you.”
back.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and slowly let go of his hand. “Damon,” I whispered softly, leaning closer to him. “I’ll be right outside, okay?”
His breathing hitched slightly, like he was trying to respond.
The nurse stepped between us, blocking my view of him and I had no choice but to move.
I walked down the hallway on shaking legs just as the door closed behind me. It felt colder than before.
The moment the door shut, four heads snapped toward me.
Anya was the first to stand.
“What happened?” she demanded.
“Why were the doctors rushing in?” Cassie asked quickly.
My mouth opened, but for a moment no words came out.
Then I forced them past the tightness in my throat. “He moved.”
The women froze.
“What?” Cassie breathed.
“He squeezed my hand,” I said. “And the nurse said he’s responding.”
Hope flashed across Naomi’s face so quickly it almost hurt to look at. “That’s good news, right?”
My voice broke. “I guess it is. I don’t know.”
Cassie covered her mouth with both hands and began crying again. “Oh my God.”
She was sobbing so hard that I had to console her, patting down her back.
Malika exhaled slowly, like she’d been holding her breath for hours, and Naomi leaned back against the
wall, closing her eyes in relief.
My eyes met Anya’s.
She looked shaken, but it did nothing to hide the hostility in her eyes as she stared at me.
“I heard he got shot by someone close to you,” she said, her voice low. “Is that true?”

I froze, caught off guard by her question.
Naomi opened her eyes slowly. “Anya-”
But Anya didn’t look away from me.
“Well?” she pressed. “Is it true?”
My throat felt dry. “Someone betrayed us.”
“That’s not what I asked,” she replied. “I asked if it was someone close to you.”
Cassie sniffed loudly through her tears. “Can we not do this right now?”
Anya ignored her.
“That Fiorella bitch threw it in my face,” she continued, her eyes narrowing slightly. “That Damon got shot in your place. But I refuse to believe he willing got in front of a bullet for you. So tell me, is it true?”
I stared at her, my fingers curling slowly into my palms.
“Yes,” I said finally.
Cassie looked at me sharply.
Naomi straightened from the wall.
But I wasn’t done. “He protected me like any husband who loves his wife would. Is there a problem with that?”
All eyes turned to her.
Anya’s eyes hardened. “You expect me to believe that?”
“I don’t care what you believe,” I replied. “I just want you to stop acting like a bitch for a second. This is not the place for drama.”
“You could have made my child fatherless,” she snapped.
Malika exhaled, her eyes on Anya. “I can’t believe I’m asking this. Why are you so entitled when it comes
to Damon?”
Cassie nodded. “I second that question. No offense, but you make it seem like he’s your biggest accomplishment. I didn’t want to believe Gabby at first, but I see her point now.”
Anya scoffed. “Are you all insane?”
“You need to sort yourself out, Anya,” Naomi finally spoke. “This doesn’t look pretty on you. Whatever it
is.”
She looked between us, shock flashing across her face. Then, with a once–over look, she turned around and walked out angrily.

“Hopefully, she comes back to senses quick,” Malika said, searching her bag for check into my hotel now or I’ll have no where decent to sleep tonight.”
I nodded. “I understand.”
Cassie turned to Malika. “Can I join you? I forgot to book a room.”
“Why wouldn’t you?” Naomi cut in. “You even cried harder than the man’s wife.”
Cassie threw her a look.
We exchanged pleasantries and they left together.
