CHAPTER 153
GABRIELLE’S POV
The kiss was soft at first.
A silent promise that I would love him no matter what.
But when his free hand moved to the back of my head and pressed my lips harder against his, I lost control of my body.
He held my head in place and kissed me until I was senseless.
I melted in his arms, drowning in his warmth and craving more of him.
Damon finally broke the kiss and pressed his forehead against mine.
“You do damages to me, Gabrielle,” he whispered. “And yet you’re the only one who makes me feel sane.”
He pulled back slightly and stared into my eyes.
“What are you?” he asked.
I stared back at him, my chest heaving, my lips parted, and my body aching for more.
Then I leaned closer and whispered, “Anything you want me to be, husband.”
Surprise flickered across his face before melting into something softer. “You’re an angel.”
“I’m your angel,” I whispered with a small smile. “But by the time I tell you what I’ve been up to, you might not think so anymore.”
Curiosity flashed in his eyes.
He might not want to admit it–or even understand it, since it had been years since he felt anything–but I could tell he wasn’t completely numb anymore.
He might not be fully there yet, but he wasn’t where he used to be either.
“Tell me everything,” he said.
I pulled away reluctantly and sank back on the chair.
And I told him everything–from the moment I first met Phoebe at the hospital to the moment I hit her.
His expression barely changed. “You killed her?”
“No,” I said. “I only knocked her out. I didn’t care if she lived or died. I just wanted to protect us.”
He didn’t respond immediately, and I began to fear the worst. Maybe he didn’t see me the same way now that he knew I wasn’t so innocent after all.
I reached for his hand, my voice soft when I spoke. “Does that make you love me any less?”
Damon pulled his hand away.
My heart dropped.
Before I could say anything, he reached out and cupped my cheek.
His voice dropped to a whisper. “You could pick up a knife and stab me in the head, and if I survived it, I’d still crawl my way back to you.”
His words settled over me slowly, heavily–like something sacred and dangerous at the same time.

“You’d still crawl back to me?” I repeated softly.
Damon didn’t hesitate.
“Yes. And I’m proud of you for standing up to your sister. I know how much you love her.”
His praise rushed through me as I leaned into his touch.
My eyes filled with tears despite myself. “You’re not even mad at me? If I had dealt with her sooner, you wouldn’t have been shot.”
“I could never be mad at you,” he said softly. “And if you’re ever in danger again, I won’t think twice about laying down my life for yours-”
“No, don’t say that,” I cut in.
“There’s no life without you, Gabrielle,” he went on. “I’m relieved you’ve seen her for who she truly is. But even if you hadn’t, I’d still love you.”
My breath hitched.
His hand slid to my chin, lifting my face. “You’re everything to me. I never want you to forget that. Say you won’t.”
I shook my head, tears streaming down my face. “I won’t.”
I lunged into his arms before I could stop myself.
He groaned softly when my body hit his, but he still wrapped his arm tightly around me.
In Damon’s arms, I finally felt safe enough to break down after carrying the weight of everything alone for days.
“I just wanted to have a normal relationship with my sister,” I cried into his shoulder. “I wanted to believe I could still fix what we had. But now I see she’s really gone… and it hurts so much.”
His hand ran gently through my hair.
“It’s okay, wife,” he murmured. “You did nothing wrong. Some people just keep loving others even at their own expense. But you have me. I’m your family now.”
His words warmed something deep inside my chest.
“Thank you,” I said, turning to look at him. “And I’m your family now too. I’m going to give you so much love that you’ll forget your past.”
“Not if I make you forget yours first,” he returned, earning a weak smile from me.
We had finally faced our pasts, and even with Rocco’s threat looming over us, I could finally see a future for us.
I wanted to ask about his sister, but I could see the exhaustion on his face.
If the doctor knew he had been talking this much, she would have dragged me out of the room already.
Or at least try to.
I had a feeling Damon wouldn’t let me go.
I pressed my lips against his. “I can’t wait until you get better so I can show you just how much I missed you.”
“Who said I have to get better first?” he asked.
I laughed and lowered my voice. “I don’t know. Science? Your heart is not in the best shape for an orgasm right now.”

He didn’t respond immediately.
He watched me as I laughed, then reached out and brushed my hair away from my face. “We have the rest of our lives for that. I love you, wife.”
“I love you, husband.”
He kissed my lip before shifting slightly to make room for me. “Can you at least cuddle with me?”
My jaw dropped.
Damon Gravari was asking me for cuddles?
I stared at him like he had just spoken another language.
“You… want to cuddle?” I repeated slowly.
A faint crease appeared between his brows. “Is that strange?”
“Yes,” I said immediately. “Very strange.”
Damon Gravari–the cold man who once told me he didn’t do cuddles, the same man who terrified half the city without even trying–was now asking me to cuddle like some soft, needy boyfriend.
The absurdity of it made a small laugh escape my lips.
His eyes narrowed slightly. “You’re laughing at me.”
“A little,” I admitted.
His expression turned almost offended. “I was shot, Gabrielle. I think I’ve earned the right to request physical comfort from my
wife.”
I wiped the remaining tears from my cheeks, still smiling. “Yes, but I think it’s cute. You’re cute.”
Damon’s frown deepened as if he didn’t like the idea of being called cute – another act I still found cute.
He shifted slightly on the bed, wincing almost imperceptibly as he moved to the side to make room.
“Come here,” he said, his voice quieter this time.
The vulnerability in it wiped away the last of my teasing.
I didn’t hesitate this time.
I kicked off my shoes and carefully climbed onto the bed beside him, moving slowly so I wouldn’t hurt him.
The mattress dipped beneath my weight.
