GABRIELLE’S POV

Since I decided to stay away from alcohol for now, I drowned my frustration in chocolates. Lila was sitting beside me while we watched a PG movie.

After Damon left, she came in from Susan’s quarters. She was a far better company than her father.

The bastard has a third ex–wife.

What in hell’s name did I marry into?

I bit into another chocolate and groaned. “You know what’s crazy? Your dad’s ex–wives could form a small village.”

Lila laughed, tossing popcorn into her mouth.

I side–eyed her. “You think they hold meetings? What am I doing asking a child such questions? Just forget I said anything.”

She smiled and continued watching her movie. She was such a sweet little girl.

Lila continued to stuff popcorn into her mouth and turned to me. “Are you mad?”

“Yes,” I said flatly.

She nodded, like she understood completely. “Daddy makes people mad sometimes.”

I turned my head slowly. “Does he?”

She nodded again, licking chocolate off her fingers. “He made Miss. Cassie cry in the pool. Then she went home and never came back. We used to watch movies together like this.”

Maybe that was the third ex–wife.

I blinked. “Miss Cassie?”

Lila shrugged, “She used to live here. Daddy said she went on vacation forever.”

My stomach dropped. “How many people lived here before me, Lila?”

She began counting on her tiny fingers, humming between numbers. “Hmm… Miss Naomi, Miss Cassie… oh, and the one that gave me a big teddy bear!”

I sat still, a cold wave running down my spine, including her mother who was four women.

Before I could ask any more questions, someone knocked at the door. I groaned and cleaned myself before checking it.

A young woman around my age with red hair walked in. She was wearing a floral dress and had her hair in a ponytail.

Lila screamed. “Miss Cassie!”

The woman spread her arms open. “Come here, Lila”

Lila ran straight into her arms, and the woman hugged her tightly, spinning her around once before setting her down.

I cleared my throat. “Go upstairs, Lila. I’ll meet you there.”

She nodded and skipped up the stairs happily.

“Let me guess,” I started once we were alone. “You’re his ex–wife.”

She looked at me once, a flicker of pain passing in her eyes. “It’s so funny. I used to be your shoes not even up to two months ago.”

I folded my arms. “You’re his third ex–wife?”

She smiled bitterly. “I see you haven’t gotten an invitation to the metaphorical wives club.”

“I don’t understand,” I said, leading her to the chair. “I don’t get the joke. Naomi said telling me everything would ruin the fun. What fun?”

She sat across from me. “They like introducing ourselves one by one and enjoying the look on the latest wife’s face.”

“They? What about you?”

“I was the last wife before you. Damon never made me feel like there was more but a girl could hope right?” She asked and continued. “When he approached me with the contract I was ecstatic. But after I signed it, different women kept coming to me and claiming to be his ex–wives.”

I leaned forward, my palms flat on my knees. “How many?”

Cassie looked down at her hands. “Four. Before me.”

I froze. “Four?”

She nodded. “I was the fifth and that makes you the sixth one. There’s an inside joke the women had that he would stop at
