CHAPTER THIRTY–FIVE
GABRIELLE’S POV
The night went away but the feeling remained,
Today was a new day so I decided to get my ass out of bed and try new things after Damon left for his meeting
“I can’t believe you gave the staff the day off. Damon is a lucky man to have a good cook for a wife,” Fiorelle said as we got out of
the car.
I almost laughed. “I’m not a good cook. In fact, I almost burned down Father’s house one time I tried making eggs ”
She turned to me. “Who fucks up eggs?”
“Me.”
“How?”
“Now, you have the right to be curious as to how that happened but I’ll be taking that one to my grave.”
She smiled but didn’t press.
We entered the kitchen where I would be attempting to make Damon alfredo pasta. Fiorella dropped the grocery bags on the kitchen counter before lighting up a joint she pulled from her pocket.
I frowned. “Really? Smoking pot in the kitchen after I told you I almost burnt down the house trying to cook?
She shrugged. “Damon can buy another house.”
“Yes he can,” I said, walking up to her and taking the joint. “Then he’d mock me for it for the rest of our marriage.”
Her smile faded. “You don’t think you’ll pass the one year mark?”
I threw the joint in the trash. “I don’t think I will. None of the other five ex–wives did. I’m going to be one of them someday so I better start getting used to it.”
A moment of silence passed between us.
“Well, none of them was you. None of them could make him feel his emotions,” she said, bringing out the groceries from the bag,
I paused over the sink. “Let it go, Fiorella.”
“If you say so,” she said. “I’ll be back soon.”
She walked to the door, then paused and looked over her shoulder. “Just don’t break his heart, Gabrielle.”
I scoffed, washing my hands. “He doesn’t have one.”
She laughed. “I know, right?”
Then she left.
I dried my hands and leaned into the counter, letting the silence swallow the room. Fiorella’s words hovered in the air like smoke I couldn’t wave away.
Don’t break his heart, Gabrielle.
Please.
If only it were that simple.

My phone buzzed on the counter. I snatched it before the screen even lit up. An unknown number had been calling me a lot recently but I kept ignoring it.
I decided to pick up this time. “Hello?”
“Gabby, it’s you,” I heard an awfully familiar voice say. “It’s me, Jared.”
I dropped my phone like it burned my hand, my heart pounding heavily in my chest.
“Hello. Are you there?”
I picked up the phone again and willed myself to stay calm. “What do you want?”
“Gabby, I missed you. I’m very sorry…”
“You have some fucking nerves, Jared,” I snapped. “How are you calling me from jail?”
“Let’s just say I have some connections,” he answered, his voice pulling back memories from our times together. “Emily hasn’t come to see me in weeks. I’m worried about her.”
I pursed my lips, swallowing the bile that rose of my throat at the sound of his voice.
Jared continued. “Your father won’t talk to me. I’ve tried everything. I called her new apartment but there was no response either. If anything happened to her I don’t know what I’d do.”
My knees wobbled and I sat down on the floor. I had no idea he truly cared for her. I took the phone away from my ears and stared at the caller ID, tears forming in my eyes.
I exhaled and tried to compose myself but I was falling apart. I was a damn fool to ever think he loved me. He never did. The one he truly loved was my sister. All he wanted from me was my inheritance.
The entire year we dated was all a facade.
“Are you there?” Jared called out. “Gabby
–
“It’s Gabrielle to you,” I snapped. “And I heard you loud and clear.”
“Why weren’t you responding?”
“I have nothing to say to you. That’s not my problem, Jared,” I answered. “Find her yourself.”
“She’s your flesh and blood. Your twin sister for crying out loud,” he said, his voice dripping with hate and disgust. “And you don’t care she’s mis-”
“I was her twin sister too when she slept with you behind my back,” I said, my voice cold but my heart was heavy. “I was her flesh and blood when she planned with you to break my heart and take my inheritance.”
The tears fell freely now and I couldn’t stop them.
“What did I do to deserve that? What did I ever do to you, Jared?”
He laughed mockingly at me even though he could hear the despair in my words. “This is why I prefer Emily. She wouldn’t whine about shit like this in my ears. She’s a real woman unlike you. So tell me where she is.”
His words sliced through me like a sharp knife, dragging every buried humiliation back to the surface.
I wiped my face with the back of my hand, furious at myself for crying in the first place.
“Just tell me where she is,” Jared snapped, impatience leaking through the phone like venom. “You’re the only one who might know.”
I stood up from the floor. “I have no idea where she is. Why the hell would I know? She hasn’t spoken to me since the day you

two betrayed me. Ring a bell?”
He huffed. “Gabrielle, I don’t have time for your drama. Emily is missing.”
I was genuinely worried for my sister’s safety, but this could be one of their new tricks to get back into my life.
“She could be anywhere now. Are you hiding her?”
I laughed bitterly. “She didn’t hide behind me when she was in your bed.”
He growled, actually growled. “You’re still stuck on that?”
“Are you out of your mind?” I screamed into the phone. “You two ruined my life.”
“No, Gabrielle. You ruined your own life by being naive and stupid enough to think anyone could love you. Especially someone like me.”
The tears came back hot and unstoppable but this time, they were angry. Jared wasn’t worth anything to me anymore but his actions hurt really badly.
