CHAPTER THIRTY–NINE
GABRIELLE’S POV
My hand fell from the door handle. My heartbeat was so loud I thought she could hear it.
“Emily?” My voice barely came out.
She stepped inside without waiting for permission, brushing past me like she couldn’t stand the sight of me.
“Surprised?” she asked, tilting her head. “You didn’t think I’d just let you disappear?”
I blinked at her. “What are you doing here?”
Her gaze flicked to the elevator behind me. “Take me upstairs. Now. We need to talk.”
My fingers twitched beside my thigh. I wanted to close the door. I wanted to grab her by the arm and throw her out. But all I could do was stand there and stare at her.
My sister.
The one person whom I had put before anyone else.
Including myself.
“Didn’t you hear me? Take me upstairs,” she repeated, stepping closer. “We need to talk.”
I didn’t move.
Her jaw tightened. “Don’t make this hard, Gabby. Don’t fucking push me.”
I swallowed and turned toward the elevator. She followed right behind me, so close I could smell her familiar scent.
Tears sprang to my eyes at the memories that they brought up but I pushed them down.
The doors slid shut and we went up in silence.
Emily’s reflection glared back at me from the mirrored wall. Mine looked… rattled.
When the doors opened to the penthouse, she pushed past me again, walking straight into the living room like she’d been here before.
She spun around.
“What the hell are you doing here with a monster like Damon Gravari?”
The question hit me like a slap.
I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.
Emily stepped closer, lowering her voice. “Do you have any idea what you’re walking into? Or are you actually this stupid?”
My throat tightened. “Emily-”
་་
“No.” She held up a hand. “You’re going to tell me everything. Right now. It was fun when you paid him to kiss you on your wedding day, to make you feel wanted after Jared chose me. Pathetic, of course, but fun. Now, it’s giving desperation.”
Her eyes burned into mine.
And for the first time in a long time, I didn’t recognize my sister at all.
“Why are you, Emily?” I asked, my voice smaller than I’d have liked.

She didn’t respond immediately. She looked around, her eyes scanning for something.
“Thank goodness he’s rich,” she said. “He won’t miss some of his belongings.”
“Are you crazy?” I asked, a slight frown on my face. “I’m not letting you steal from Damon.”
Her eyes fell on me again.
A mocking smile formed on her lips. “Oh, let me guess. You’re falling for him, aren’t you?”
My breath caught.
“No, I’m not.”
“Of course you are,” she replied. “It doesn’t take much for you. You’ve fallen for him a month after Jared. You’re so desperate for love it’s disgusting.”
Her words stung but I didn’t show that it affected me. “Why are you here? Jared told me you were missing.” I asked.
“Aww, my sweet Jared,” she cooed, her eyes checking mine for any sign of pain. “He loves me so much. But I wasn’t missing. I was coming here to look for you. Where were you?”
“None of your business,” I returned. “If you have nothing more to say please leave.”
Her smile came back. “Of course. I need money. I’ve spent all the money in my accounts making sure Jared is comfortable and out of danger in his cell. Now, that money has run out and I need a refill.”
I scoffed. “How’s that any of my business?”
She stepped closer. “You’re going to give me the money. Damon is extremely loaded. Even more wealthy than Father. You can take from his countless stacks I don’t think he’ll notice.”
“And why would I do that for you and Jared?”
“I’m your bloody sister,” she hissed. “You have no other choice but to help me. You owe me for everything. For taking Father’s love away from me my entire childhood. For living in your shadows for years.”
A short, humorless laugh slipped out of me. “You caused that yourself, Emily. Nobody asked you to be mediocre. It’s not my fault I was better than you in everything.
She lunged forward and grabbed my wrist, her nails digging in. “I’m not asking you,” she whispered. “I’m telling you. You’re going to help me. You’re going to get the money. And you’re going to keep your mouth shut.”
I yanked my hand free. “I’m not stealing anything from Damon. And I’m not funding Jared.”
Her jaw clenched. “You think Damon cares about you? You think he’d lift a finger for you if something went wrong? Wake up, Gabby. He kills people like us for fun.”
“I don’t care what you think you know,” I said.
“Oh, I know enough,” she shot back.
She sighed and checked her purse for something. Then she brought out a gun.
I took a step back, my heart beating wildly. “Where did you get that from?”
She laughed, her gun raised at me. “I got it a year ago. I was going to kill you with it before Jared brought up the idea of taking everything from you. Death would have been too easy on you.”
My breath froze.
“You’re insane,” I whispered.

“Maybe,” she shrugged, the gun still in her hand. “Or maybe I’m just tired of you ruining my life without consequences.” “You’re pointing a gun at your own sister,” I said, my voice trembling despite everything I tried to hide.
She gave a soft and almost bored laugh. “Please. Don’t act shocked. You should have known for years that I hated you. I told you I’d destroy you one day.”
