CHAPTER FIFTY TWO

GABRIELLE’S POV

My brows drew together in confusion as I froze. What?

The expression on Beatrice’s face was a stark contrast to what I’d seen when Damon was with us.

The air suddenly turned hostile.

I don’t like repeating myself, girl,Her voice was devoid of the warmth from earlier. I heard you were able to crawl your way inside that rock he calls a heart. Damon isn’t capable of love nor is he worthy of it and everyone, including him, knows that. You have to be getting paid to put up this silly act.

It’s not an act,I started, my voice wavering. He’s been married before I just happened to be the sixth one.

Beatrice’s eyes narrowed. So you’re justthe latest in a long line of girls he toys with?

No!I said, heat rising in my chest. I didn’tIt’s not like that. Ihe’s different with me.

She paused, then burst into a fit of laughter while I stood there, shame crawling up my skin.

Oh my goodness, she laughed. “You’re so stupid. Damon can never change, it’s the one thing I’m sure of.

She blew imaginary dust from my nails and I stood there, trying not to feel like a fool. It was futile.

No one can love Damon especially after he killed his mother and then got his sister killed years later. Not even his father did. I only like the financial benefits that he brings, she finished.

My chest tightened. He killed his mother and sister?

She smirked, like she’d caught me in something. You didn’t even know. That tells me everything. If he cared about you, he would have told you already. He’s only pretending for our approval.

I just stared at her, stunned that she could lie so confidently.

Damon wouldn’t do that.

He wasn’t a killer.

But even while I denied it in my head, a small, uneasy thought slipped in. What if there was something I didn’t know?

The worst part wasn’t her accusation. It was realizing she despised Damon but pretended to adore him because of his money. And she assumed I was doing the same thing.

She was a cruel woman.

Hello? She snapped her fingers in my face. Tell me how much he’s paying you. I’ll double it, and you can crawl back to wherever you came from before you embarrass this family any further. Everyone already thinks your marriage is take.

My throat tightened.

The panic came fast because part of what she said was true. My marriage to Damon was a contract I never even read.

My jaw twitched but I managed a smile. I can assure you that this isn’t fake. He is not paying me. He can feel his emotions because of me for some reason.

Her frown deepened. I guess the amount was that high then. I’ll give you ten million dollars and if you don’t agree we can work our way up from there. There’s no way a church mouse like you can be good for my sweet grandnephew.

A boulder settled in my chest.

A church mouse like me?

I had no idea she was this classist.

I saw Damon some weeks back,Beatrice continued, when his last marriage was falling apart. I told him I had someone properly lined up for him. Someone from a good family. He agreed to meet her. And now I find out he married a dirt like you behind my back? After everything I’ve done for him?

I stood my ground for once, my fist curling at my sides. I won’t have you insult me because you want to act like a glorified grandmother to a man who doesn’t even have respect for you.

Something flashed in her eyes and her brows drew together. I couldn’t tell what it was but I could tell jealousy was part of it.

Maybe I had come in the way of her plans unknowingly.

I took a step forward. You were going to give him a wife but he married me anyway and you can’t handle that. He doesn’t even

respect

SMACK!

The slap cracked across my face so suddenly that my head whipped to the side. A gasp tore from my throat as the sting bloomed hot across my cheek. Tears pooled in my eyes instantly, more from shock than pain.

How dare you hit me?I spat, rage shaking my voice.

I couldn’t remember the last time I felt so angry that it made me want to act so violent. My hands itched to hit her back, but I

forced them still.

Never speak to me that way again, you poor whore, she sneered, disgust evident on her face as she wiped her hand on her dress like touching me dirtied her. You won’t last long. You’ll be kicked out like the others and I’ll be the first to celebrate.
