Madeline:

“Let’s go get food for them,” Silver suggested, giving me a weak smile as I watched a few omega maids walk upstairs with trays of food.

They struggled to balance everything, so Silver and I rushed over to help.

“Imagine growing up in a family where you know your father doesn’t love your mother,” Silver continued while trying to steady the trays. She gave the maids a small nod, letting them know they could leave because we had it handled. “He should have at least tried to accept me for the sake of our daughters, but I guess he always loved you, Madeline,”

Hearing my name in that sentence made my chest tighten.

I did not know how to respond.

She looked at me with eyes full of old hurt, and for a moment, I could not tell whether she wanted sympathy or someone to blame.

Silver and I were taking a little too long to reach the children’s hallway because we were still talking about life, relationships, and holding the trays.

“I had no idea,” I told her in an apologetic tone. “I don’t know what to say or what to do in this case, but I will never ask him to divorce you. That is all that I can do.”

She gave me a genuine smile.

“That is already too much, considering how I used to bully you. Thank you for being so nice, Madeline,” Silver remarked.

Her kindness still felt strange. I could not understand how someone like her could change overnight.

A loud scream suddenly erupted from the children’s hall. Silver and I froze.

Then we rushed toward the sound, and what we saw when we reached the entrance made both of us drop the trays.

The food crashed against the floor with a loud thud.

Hailey lay on the ground badly injured. Blood stained her hair.

It looked like Elara had hit her with a toy. I could tell right away that Elara was once again possessed by the sickness.

Her voice was heavy, and she spoke in tongues, shouting the same things she always did at her siblings.

“I will kill you. I don’t want any more siblings,” she screamed while crying.

Silver’s eyes widened. She knelt beside her daughter, trying to grab her, but Hailey was bleeding a lot from her head.

I hurried to Elara and held her, trying to comfort her and stop her from flailing her arms toward the others.

The rest of the children were crying and had cornered themselves in fear.

That was when Elgin arrived.

His face shifted with a father’s pain, but when Silver shouted, everything changed.

“That psychopath of a daughter you brought here did this to our daughter!” she yelled.

My heart skipped a beat, and Elara suddenly stopped struggling.

It seemed like the loud noise snapped her out of her trance.

She went limp and began to fall asleep on my shoulder, just like she always did after an episode.

I looked up and saw Elgin’s eyes turn toward Elara.

The way he looked at her made my stomach twist. It was not the look of a father worried for both of his daughters.

It was the look of someone who cared only about one.

He did not even glance at Elara the way a concerned father would look at his sick child.

He picked up Hailey carefully while Silver grabbed Hannah.

“We are going to the hospital,” Elgin stated.

Silver nodded and hurried after him.

I gathered my own children while Elara had fallen asleep on my shoulder.

I was ready to go after them, but Elgin stopped in the doorway and turned toward me.

“Take the kids to the mansion,” he ordered. “Not to the hospital.” 1

His tone made no sense to me, but I nodded and left with my children.

At home, I paced anxiously while Bodhi and Gina cried in the room.

I tried to comfort them and gave them ice cream, but every now and then they remembered what had happened and began sniffling again.

Elara sat on the couch with tears streaming down her face.

“I have no idea what happened, Mommy, I swear,” she cried again. “I just know I got triggered. Hailey was saying things to me.”

I stopped and faced her.
