414–Losing My Dignity

Madeline:

“You are going to Graham’s mansion to work for him? It is so late. By the time you return, it will be midnight, Madeline,” Lord Jonah remarked, trying to stop me from going.

Ever since I returned, I told him what had happened.

He was deeply disturbed and wanted to comfort me, but all he could do was play with the kids and keep them busy.

My kids, however, I noticed, were growing weak. They no longer had proper care. They were not getting enough food either.

All in all, Baxter needed to wake up. His Madeline and his children were suffering.

“Lord Jonah, I wish there was another way for me to help Baxter, but there is none,” I said, taking a glass of

water from him.

“I cannot believe those two have sunk so low. They do not even remember that this is their best friend they are threatening to kick out of the hospital,” Lord Jonah replied, tears falling from his eyes.

I immediately held his hand and gently rubbed it between mine, giving him a small smile.

“You do not have to worry about it. Baxter does not have to worry about anything. His wife, his mate, will do everything to give him the best care and support,” I assured him.

As I said that, I watched him nod and look at me with pride in his eyes.

“I am so happy that my son found a loyal and genuine mate,” he told me.

His words of appreciation meant a lot. I never thought that he liked me, but I noticed he had started to soften toward me. 1

As for Lady Eugenia, I could tell she was not doing well either. When I arrived today, I saw her sit on the couch and speak to the wall as if she were speaking to Baxter. 1

It filled my heart with deep sadness, but there was not much I could do for her. She was not the type to confide in me or let me help her heal.

I needed healing myself too.

“I just need you to take care of my children while I am gone, please,” I told Lord Jonah, who placed his hand on my head and nodded.

“Mommy, you are leaving again, but we want to go see Gina and daddy. But how are we going to do that?” Bodhi cried as he came in.

They were no longer playing with their toys. They wanted their family back, I could tell.

But everything was so scattered that I did not know where to begin putting the pieces of us back together.

And then I had to go and face Elgin and Graham. I could only wonder what kind of awful things they had planned for me that night.

Graham’s place was close to the motel, so that was where they wanted me to come.

Elara squeezed herself between my knees, standing close, while Bodhi climbed onto the bed so he could hug me from the side. I hugged them both, realizing they were trying to stop me from leaving.

“Mommy will go out and bring you pizza today. What do you think about that?” I asked, breaking the hug so I could look at their faces.

“No, I do not want anything. I just want you,” Elara replied, shaking her head.

It had come to the point where nothing I said would interest them. They just wanted their family.

“Okay, how about we play in the morning? Tomorrow, the entire day, I will be wish you,” I told them, watching them wrinkle their noses slightly.

“Please,” I urged.

They gave in and nodded gently.

“Now go and play with Lord Jonah, okay? Do not bother him,” I reminded them, as always.

Part of me wondered how I would look at myself tomorrow. I knew what was going to happen tonight, and I was afraid of it. I did not know how I would respond to those two men. I only knew that I needed help for

Baxter.

Once I had said goodbye to my children and Lord Jonah, I left for the main road. As Graham had said, a car pulled up to pick me up.

From the outside, it seemed like he wanted to talk about the illness. But was that the truth? No. I knew that

was far from the truth.

Throughout the car ride, I rubbed my palms together anxiously.

Finally, the mansion appeared before me. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car, shutting the door behind me.

A maid stood at the door, likely waiting for my arrival. The moment she saw me, she gestured for me to

walk inside.

I already knew the layout of Baxter’s home, but it was easy for me to walk into that house now.

I followed her silently, noticing how quiet the entire mansion was.

“Where is luna Kaylee and Lady Penny?” I asked the maid instead of waiting to ask Baxter or Elgin.

The maid turned to me and gave me a strange look as she answered softly.

“There is nobody else at home. They have gone away on vacation to celebrate victory today. They will return in two days.”

As she finished speaking, I felt a large gulp travel down my throat.
