"That's the monster who killed your sister," I said quietly. "Do you want to die like that too? Do you want the monster to eat you the way it ate Gina?"

The moment I started asking those questions, she clung to me harder, crying as she shook her head.

"Do you know why it ate Gina?" I asked.

She buried herself against me, trembling.

"Because she disrespected her daddy."

As soon as I said it, I felt her small arms tighten around me even more.

"I'm sorry, Daddy," she cried. "I won't be rude to you anymore."

I knew it was cruel.

But I felt like I had to do it if I wanted her to accept me and stop fighting me every few seconds.

I ran back to the car with Elara in my arms.

She was so terrified of the monsters that she clung to me tightly.

The way her little arms wrapped around my neck made something shift inside me.

For the first time in my life, I felt what it was like to be loved by a daughter.

I did not even know how to process that feeling.

I placed her inside the car, and the moment I climbed in, I saw my mother running down the trail with Lady Abigail close behind her.

“Mother!” I called, still standing beside the half-open driver’s door.

“Lord John is with the other warriors,” she shouted breathlessly as she rushed toward us. “They escaped already. They’ll be fine, but I need to survive.”

I quickly opened the back door for her.

The second my mother climbed inside, Lady Abigail reached the car too.

“Take me with you,” Lady Abigail pleaded.

But before I could react, I heard the lock click.

My mother had locked the door from the backseat.

“Mom, what are you doing? Open the door,” I told her, turning toward her in shock.

Instead of answering me immediately, my mother looked straight at Lady Abigail.

“Well,” she said with a faint smirk, “you always believed that when a man dies, another man should take his place. But what happens when a woman dies?”

That was when I realized exactly what she was doing.

Lady Abigail was the only council leader standing in the way of my mother taking her position.

Lady Abigail’s eyes widened in horror.

She grabbed the handle and desperately tried to force the door open.

“You people are disgusting!” she screamed. “I should have never trusted any of you. I don’t even know if I was ever on the right side!”

She kept screaming and pulling at the door.

Then suddenly, the monster swooped down.

Everything happened too fast.

All I saw were massive claws wrapping around Lady Abigail’s neck before she was ripped violently into half.

The creature flew off immediately, heading back toward the battlefield to attack more people.

Her headless body collapsed onto the ground.

Elara screamed.

Like she wanted someone to hold her.

The moment Elara reached for her, my mother slapped her hands away.

"No. Sit properly in your seat," my mother grunted as she leaned back and folded her arms across her chest.

I did not stop her.

My mother already had two granddaughters, Hailey and Hannah.

As long as she loved them, I did not care if she ignored Elara.

I only wanted Elara so I could show the world that my bloodline would not be left at the mercy of a monster.

Elara listened to my mother and hid her face in her hands, sitting quietly in the corner of the seat.

“What happened over there?”

My mother gave me a slight nod before shifting closer to whisper in my ear.

"That monster didn't even attack Madeline, even when it had her pinned down."

The words made the hairs on the back of my neck rise.
