Mathew:
"And then Madeline came home with Graham. Do you have any idea how I felt when I saw his fucking face? I was burning from deep within. I wanted to fucking kill him, but I had to tolerate it because—" He paused, taking a deep breath as a big tear rolled down his cheek. "Because I trust Madeline. So no, I'm never betraying my friends."
He hiccupped and turned away from us.
I looked at Nala. She lowered her gaze in guilt, probably because she had been giving him a very hard time.
Every time he wanted to be alone so he could cope, she would appear out of nowhere and criticize him.
I had seen her around him, and I guessed she was just trying to annoy him.
I didn't know.
To me, it was adorable.
If she had been doing all that to me, I would have been head over heels for her.
Over the past two days, I had watched her annoy him to the highest degree.
"Anyways, I'm gonna go get the herbs from the well. I don't fucking care what anybody thinks about me," Ron finished as he walked toward the door.
Neither Nala nor I said anything.
Once he was gone, I turned to Nala with my hands on my waist.
"You've been fucking bullying him every day," I reminded her, and she pouted.
"Well, I was just trying to be there for him so he could get over his pain and maybe find someone else to argue with. I was just trying to distract him."
The way she spoke, she seemed genuinely worried about him.
"Well, there are other ways to do it, you know," I said as I pulled a stool in front of her, sat down, and rested my arms on my knees.
"What other ways? You mean by abducting someone?" she remarked.
Then she sighed.
"Look, it is a dangerous thing to do, Mathew. You think turning Lady Eugenia into a monster would be a great idea?" she asked, and I shrugged.
"Honestly, I don't fucking care about Lady Eugenia. She needs to suffer. She needs people to hate her."
I reminded her how much Lady Eugenia enjoyed being loved and praised.
"I was assaulted by rogues. That is how I first met—" She paused before gulping. "Men from the rogue wilderness attacked me. Baxter and Madeline were the ones who saved me. Then they got revenge for me."
The moment she started speaking, I felt as if my heart had jumped into my throat.
"Just because I smile doesn't mean I don't understand what others are feeling. I just know I have to keep going because what happened to me was not my fault. And yes, I do understand everything that his Luna went through, and I feel for her. That is why I am living on the mountain top with my people, so I can help Madeline, the victim."
Seeing this side of her made my heart flutter even harder.
Honestly, I didn't even know how to apologize for suggesting she didn't understand.
"And," she said, "you don't have to feel bad for me. I'm fine."
I guessed she realized from my silence that I felt extremely bad, so she added that on her own.
"No, I'm— I'm really sorry," I apologized.
"And if you are sorry, then untie me," she added and I narrowed my eyes at her.
