Elgin:
When I arrived and saw Rosetta in her beautiful black gown with red lipstick, I had a feeling everything would go well.
Elara was dressed in a black dress as well, her hair tied into two ponytails.
She did not protest at first, but the moment I reached for her, she slapped me.
Everyone fell silent, and I started to chuckle.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Your daddy took some time. Come over here," I said, reaching for her hand again.
I thought she had done it because she had missed me and was angry that I had not been with her.
But when she started fighting back, scratching my arms every time I tried to reach her, I realized it was making me look really bad.
"What the heck is going on?" someone in the crowd asked.
I stood and tried to wrap my arms around Elara to pull her into a hug, but she fought even harder.
Like a frightened cat, she scratched me, whimpered, and struggled against me.
"No! Don't hug me, you evil man!" Elara screamed, making my heart skip a beat.
My eyes met Rosetta's.
She looked just as shocked as I was by Elara's behavior.
"Elara, it's your daddy," I said, gently holding her shoulders.
To be honest, holding her made me realize what I had done.
I had spent my time taking care of someone else's children while hurting my own daughter in the process.
No matter what Elara said, I refused to be upset with her.
She was my daughter.
My blood.
Still, she kept resisting with all her strength.
"I think she's upset with me because I haven't been with her for the last few days," I said, looking at the crowd while struggling to hold her as she scratched and fought against me.
"No! I don't want to be with you! You're a fucking bad man, and you're a stranger. You're not my father!" Elara screamed at the top of her lungs.
Several people covered their mouths, while my mother buried her face in her hands and shook her head.
At that moment, I began to wonder if today was simply a bad day altogether.
Maybe we should have postponed this.
But what could be done now?
All eyes were on me, and I had to make this work.
"Rosetta, what is going on?" I asked.
Rosetta only shrugged in confusion as she watched Elara, whom I finally had to let go because she was screaming so loudly that people were beginning to worry about her.
"Please put her down!" someone shouted just as I was setting her down.
The moment her feet touched the ground, Elara ran behind Rosetta and hid.
"I guess she's just overwhelmed by all the cameras," I said, pointing toward them with an uneasy laugh.
