Baxter:
"Daddy, you know, I've missed you so much," Elara murmured, spreading her arms wide to show me just how much she loved me.
Then she reached up to touch my cheeks and run her fingers through my hair, almost as if she were confirming I was real.
"What are you checking?" I asked, smiling at her.
The thing I had been feeling inside me in the darkness kept growing stronger with every second.
However, the moment Elara was in my lap, it felt as though everything had become so much lighter.
I wondered if my wolf was only angry with Madeline because he knew she was someone I could lose myself to.
He blamed me for losing him too, but he hadn't told me how long he was going to keep acting this way.
"Daddy," Elara called, placing her hands on my shoulders as she tried to steady herself while standing on my thighs, treating me like I was a slide in a park.
She was all over me.
The guards watched us, exchanging glances.
I wondered if Sawyer had ever loved my children like this.
It didn't seem so.
"I'm just trying to make sure you're real," Elara replied, snapping me out of my thoughts and taking me back to the time when Madeline had said the same thing.
"Why do you think I'm not?" I asked, holding one of her hands while she rested the other on my head, bouncing on my thighs.
"Because you died. You don't remember?" Elara asked cutely, her confusion blending with the innocent certainty in her voice.
"How would I remember if I died?" I replied with a laugh.
She jumped again before settling into my lap.
"Daddy, you were dead. You know, a very bad aunt dragged you from the hospital and left you on a mountain top," Elara explained, delivering every sentence with deliberate, exaggerated facial expressions.
"Then a monster took you and ate you. Mommy found out, and then Mommy cried. Your mommy cried. Your daddy died."
She was still speaking when my heart flipped inside my chest.
"What did you say about my daddy?" I pressed.
Livia and Daniel sat on the couch beside us, watching me interact with Elara.
Daniel wrote down every piece of information he heard.
To be honest, I was beginning to realize that whatever I knew wasn't the right information at all.
That was why my wolf had gone completely silent.
He knew the moment Elara arrived that he would be caught in a huge lie.
"Your daddy, Grandpa, had a heart attack when he heard you died. So he died too. Then your mommy became so evil. She started screaming at Mommy. Mommy was crying, but your mommy, Grandma, was so rude—,” she took a pause.
"Then Grandma took Bodhi and ran away, and disappeared."
Once again, Elara acted out every part with exaggerated expressions.
She pouted, frowned angrily, then clapped her hands together before pulling one corner of her lips upward, creating a dimple in her cheek.
"Who is Bodhi?" I asked.
She looked at me as though I had already hurt her.
