Livia:
I didn't know why, but he was looking at me so strangely.
And when he told me I looked like his first wife, my heart nearly stopped.
I didn't like what he was implying.
Usually, men said things like that when they wanted to initiate something.
He was using it as an excuse to do something to me.
That thought alone made my heart pound with fear.
"You didn't say why I'm going to the event with you," I said, slowly inching away from him on the couch.
He let out a chuckle and shook his head as though he couldn't believe it.
"Well, that's because you spent time with your patient. I'm talking about Baxter."
The way he said it made it sound like he was hinting at something, as if he were calling me a liar.
"I'm not too sure. I don't—-" I paused to swallow the knot in my throat.
"When he arrived, he was in a coma too. It was as if Gina and Baxter were in the same boat, and it broke just before they reached the shore. That's why both of them ended up there."
I was lying through my teeth.
There was no way he could find any files on them. I'd forged them.
I'd secured every record of the survivors the monster had brought into the human world.
"Really?" Sawyer murmured, gently rubbing his chin.
"Did he say why he was running from the werewolf world?"
His attention had shifted from how Baxter had arrived to why he had come here.
“And what if the other children had been on the boat and drowned? What if Madeline had been with them?”
I noticed him close his eyes, as though he didn't even want to acknowledge the possibility that Madeline might have drowned too.
"I'm not sure. As far as I know, it was just the two of them," I replied softly.
"How would you know? Did Baxter tell you?" he pressed, a smile appearing on his lips.
"Did he go into a coma before the boat broke apart or afterward?"
The question was cleverly phrased because, of course, a comatose man couldn't have been sailing in a boat with his daughter.
“Actually, he hit his head when the boat broke apart. That's how he ended up in a coma. And I knew that because Gina had told me. She had woken up before him and told me it had been just the two of them. However, she didn't know why they had been running from the werewolf world. All she told me was that her father didn't belong there anymore. I wasn't sure why only Gina had been with him.”
I took a deep breath and lied.
I lied like my life depended on it.
Like I was auditioning for the role that would win me an Oscar.
