Baxter:
I didn't know where I had messed up, but Madeline had clearly caught on to something.
At the time, I couldn't respond to her because my wolf kept shutting me down.
A battle raged inside me. I kept telling my wolf that I wanted to talk to Madeline, but all he did was stir up chaos within me.
He made one thing very clear.
If I reached out to Madeline or became romantic with her again, he would shift in public the first chance he got.
So I decided to keep him under control.
At the same time, I couldn't let Madeline believe I was over her.
I never could be.
Even the thought of losing her again drove me crazy.
When Madeline took her things to Bodhi's room and decided to sleep there, I quietly returned to my own room.
After taking a shower and changing into a pair of black shorts, I stepped back out, expecting to find her lying in my bed.
I thought she was just trying to make a point.
But she wasn't there.
‘Well, we got rid of her ourselves,’ my wolf muttered inside me.
My fists clenched.
As I started walking toward the door, my wolf resisted again.
"What are you doing?" he growled, refusing to let me move any farther.
"I said stop toying with me."
I slammed my hand against the wall.
"Fine. If you want a fight, then we'll have a war." My voice came out as a clear threat.
"What?" Axe scoffed. "Don't you remember what I told you?"
His threat echoed through my mind.
"I remember it very well," I shot back. "I also remember that I upset my wife, and now she's sleeping in our children's room instead of beside me."
I hissed through my teeth as I paced across the room.
"Axe, don't you feel even a little bit that your mate is in pain?" I shouted. "Do you have any idea how long it's been since she came back here? How long it's been since we were finally reunited? Have you forgotten what our daughter told us? Have you forgotten everything Madeline went through?"
I stopped for a moment, trying to steady my breathing.
"And if, after hearing all of that, you still don't feel her pain, then let me tell you something."
I looked straight ahead, my jaw clenched.
"You're not the Axe I know. Blocking my memories won't get you anywhere. Our children have already told me everything."
I took a deep breath.
"The woman I met again—" My voice softened. "Trust me, I've fallen hopelessly in love with her all over again."
I smiled to myself despite the ache in my chest.
"You don't need to give me my old memories back. I'll make new ones with her."
As soon as I said those words, my vision blurred.
A tear rolled down my cheek.
