Madeline came out from behind the gate with Daniel, and from the way they both looked at me, I could tell they hadn't expected to find me there.

"How long have you been standing here?" Madeline asked me sweetly.

I didn't want to feel this way. I had just found my sister.

I didn't want to be suspicious of what she was doing behind her husband's back with the man that—

I stopped my thoughts right there.

I was bothered.

Damn it, I was bothered because she had been flirting with Daniel.

"Just now," I replied, lying through my teeth.

"I'm heading home as well," she said.

"Yeah. Mom left a few hours ago, so I decided I should go too," I replied, watching Madeline smile at the mention of our mother.

Sometimes, I felt bad whenever I looked at Madeline. She had suffered so much, and only now had she finally found her mother.

From everything I had heard about what had happened to Madeline, I couldn't imagine going to live in werewolf territory myself.

Okay, humans could be pretty mean too, but werewolves were a whole different breed: selfish and brutal.

"Daniel, why don't you drop her off?" Madeline suggested.

Had anyone else asked him, Daniel probably would have said no because that was what he'd been doing lately.

But because it was Madeline, he immediately nodded.

I desperately wanted to refuse Daniel's help, but this would be the first time we'd be alone together in a while, and we might finally have a conversation.

So I agreed.

"Take care," I said as I hugged Madeline and then stepped away while Daniel led the way.

He didn't even speak to me.

He wasn't even looking at me the way he used to.

And yeah, I knew I'd noticed it before and kept trying to ignore it, but there had always been something about the way he looked at me.

Somewhere in my heart, in the back of my mind, I'd always wondered if Daniel liked me.

But then he completely changed.

He stopped even trying to impress me.

After gaining power and strength, he had even started styling his hair differently. He was working out harder too.

"I'm just saying. I noticed the way you were speaking to Madeline, and don't think nobody else noticed. The president was watching you. I was just trying to warn you."

I changed my tone completely as I spoke, but stopped midway when he scoffed.

"You don't need to tell me anything. I'm aware of the dangers and the eyes on me. So if I need to do something, I'll handle it myself. Don't worry. You don't need to think for me," he replied abruptly.

I noticed the way he began speeding up.

"Well, I'm only saying this because you're my friend, and she's my sister. I don't want her marriage to fall apart," I told him, the words coming out a little harsher this time after his raised voice had startled me before.

"Her marriage isn't going to fall apart because of me. I'm not that awful. But yeah, if it falls apart for some other reason and I get a chance, I'm not going to back away."

He said it so plainly that my jaw nearly hit the floor.

"Do you know you're going to end up in the president's bad books?" I asked, watching him roll his eyes.

"I don't care. If that puts me in his bad books, then so be it," he replied, looking completely different from the Daniel I knew.

"What happened to you?" I asked, looking him up and down.

"Nothing. I'm just changing. Everybody evolves. I'm not that scared little Daniel anymore."

The way he answered me made me feel strange, and I leaned back in my seat for a moment.

Then a memory hit me.
