Madeline:
"Really? It worked?" I asked Baxter, looking hopeful.
I mean, I had been waiting for this, to be honest. Ever since I heard that his wolf didn't like me, I had been really upset. Insecure, too.
I loved Baxter, so hearing that his wolf didn't love me hurt.
But thankfully, now I was finding out that all the jealousy had finally made him realize that whatever games he was playing weren't worth it. What he was doing was wrong.
Now he wanted to take me with him when he transitioned, and I was hopeful it was because he wanted to talk to me.
"What if it's just a plan and he wants to attack you?" Baxter commented, making my smile fade.
"I'm not saying that's what he'll do, but just in case."
I could already tell that Baxter realized how much his words might have hurt me.
Imagine the man you love telling you that his wolf hates you so much that he's afraid he might hurt you.
"I still want to talk to him," I said, insisting that we go and hear him out. "I mean, he did let it slip that his plan was to speak with me. I'm already expecting that conversation."
"I can't risk it, Madeline. I can't." Baxter held my hand, trying to stop me, but I kept shaking my head.
"No, Baxter, that's enough. I have to go. We have to trust him. That's it," I mumbled.
Baxter let out a deep breath and placed his hands on his waist. He looked worried before finally nodding.
"Fine, but you'll have to take a wolfsbane injection with you, and you will inject me with it the second you feel like he's becoming a threat. Promise me," Baxter said, holding my hand and giving me a firm nod.
Well, when Kaylee went for a nap, we knew she would stay asleep for a good few hours.
That was because the maid had started giving her sleeping pills.
Any minute now, we would be on our way.
We would be fixing everything here in the human community so Baxter could finally leave for the werewolf lands.
Now, we were deep in the woods, in the area I had specifically suggested for Baxter to transition.
I knew the human world better than he did. I had lived here for years.
This part of the woods was particularly isolated.
“Do you sense any threat from him?” I asked her.
I could hear the heavy breathing behind me, but I just did not know if I was ready to turn around and face the hatred and anger in Axe's eyes.
“No. He wants to speak with me,” Lena commented, causing me to frown.
“How do you know that?” I asked her curiously as the breathing behind me intensified.
He was stepping closer and closer to me.
“I can feel him trying to reach out to me, and trust me, I want to know what he’s up to,” Lena insisted, causing me to take a deep breath before I finally turned around.
The wolf standing in front of me was taller, furrier, and darker than the one I had seen before.
I wasn’t sure why he had changed or how it was even possible, but he looked deadly as he stood there, breathing heavily.
“Lena, I’m not sure–” I paused and gulped. “What if he attacks you?” I asked, taking a step back from Axe.
“I’m ready for anything. Even if I have to beat him up, I’ll kick that sucker in the balls until his brain starts working again,” Lena hissed determinedly, making me feel a little more confident in her.
