Nina:
My father’s head snapped at me as if he had noticed it too.
And with every clap, that awful sense of familiarity tightened in my chest.
"What are you doing?" I asked, suddenly uneasy.
"Oh, I'm inviting my friend in. We arranged a little signal. I clap my hands, and that's when he makes his entrance," Baxter explained, his exaggerated gestures making the whole thing even more disturbing.
Then Byron walked in.
I gasped and stumbled backward, nearly losing my balance before my father caught my arm.
"Oh, and I brought a little gift for my friend," Byron announced.
He held up the files, the keys, and the official stamps before handing them straight to Baxter.
Baxter passed him a smile in return, then pulled him into a brief hug.
"No. Wait. That's not possible."
I pointed at myself, laughing nervously as I glanced around at the council members.
"You're not his friend. You're my mate."
One of the officials frowned.
"Have you lost your mind? What do you mean by mate?"
I cleared my throat and spun toward him.
"Let me explain. I've a wolf, though I cannot transition but it doesn't matter. He is Alpha Byron. His wolf is awake, and he is my mate!" I shouted.
And then everything clicked.
I'd been tricked.
Of course I'd been tricked.
How the hell had I believed that a devilishly handsome alpha had simply appeared in the middle of the woods and declared me his mate?
"You idiot!" my father yelled.
I whipped around to glare at him before looking back at Byron.
"It's not my fault! You were the one getting anxious. You couldn't even stay hidden in that basement for a few more days. You kept demanding that I do something to get you out before you came out yourself!"
I kept rambling, my words tumbling over one another, until one of the security officers stepped forward.
"We've already searched the basement," he announced.
My voice died in my throat.
"We also found the body of the previous guard hidden beneath the bed. Apparently, neither of you had much regard for his life."
My knees gave way, and I dropped to the floor.
My entire body went numb as the truth finally sank in.
Baxter. Madeline. Byron.
And even if we ever did, they would throw me in the werewolf world because of my wolf.
"All because of you," my father muttered.
I grunted under my breath.
"No. Because of you," I replied sternly.
That was how we spent most of the day, taking jabs at each other and insisting that everything was the other's fault.
By nightfall, we would start hoping that maybe someone would come and set us free.
But no one ever did.
"You know what? It is all my fault," my father finally admitted.
Before I could say anything, he added, "If only I had married you to a decent man."
He paused, closed his eyes, and shook his head.
"If only I had never worked for those evil people. Their bloodline is cursed. If no one stops Sawyer, his descendants will keep doing what his parents did, what he did."
His words sent a chill through me, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand.
That was probably the twentieth time my father had told me I was luckier sitting in prison than being out there married to Sawyer.
I guess he was right.
Maybe I was safe here.
