She was just asking for trouble.
“Aria married into the Evernight family, so she is one of us. Her child will carry the Evernight name. When did they become the Rowan family’s personal pharmacy?”
Raphael descended from the stairs. His expression was gentle, but his tone was cold and carried an oppressive weight.
Aria turned to look at him.
Raphael…
“Mrs. Rowan, you don’t want to bury your own child, so you’d have my Evernight family bury one of ours?” Raphael stepped behind Aldous Evernight and continued, “Gideon, remember your name is Evernight.”
For a moment, Gideon’s hands clenched into fists.
But Aldous Evernight was clearly pleased with Raphael's pointed remark and said nothing.
Gideon replied, “I understand, Raphael.”
Aria was even more surprised.
When had Gideon ever been so deferential?
Before marrying into the Evernight family, Aria had heard that the old man favored his younger son, and now it seemed to be true.
The only reason Gideon was named the heir was likely because of Raphael’s health, right?
Aria stole a glance at Raphael.
He looked no different from an ordinary person, but whenever he was near, Aria could always smell the faint scent of medicine.
He was probably still on medication to manage his condition.
She wondered if the line of succession would change if Raphael ever made a full recovery.
But none of that mattered to her anymore. In a week, she could go to the courthouse and file the divorce papers.
Then she and Gideon could go their separate ways.
Roxanne paid no mind to Raphael’s words.
Ultimately, the problem was with Gideon.
If Gideon had been firm, would Lilith have ever had a chance?
Watching Roxanne's desperate defense, Aria’s lips curved into a sudden smile as she looked at Aldous Evernight.
“Grandpa, I believe Gideon and Lilith are completely innocent.”
Aldous Evernight was skeptical. “You believe that?”
Aria nodded. “Gideon and Lilith have known each other since they were children, so it’s understandable that they’re close. Besides, Gideon said they just have a brother-sister relationship, right, Gideon?”
Gideon nodded. “As long as you know.”
Aria’s smile widened. “Why don’t we hold a press conference and have Gideon officially declare Lilith his adopted sister? That way, no one will misunderstand their relationship anymore, right?”
“Gideon, Mom, what do you two think?”
