It might be hard to guess Gideon’s true intentions, but as a mother, she knew exactly what was on Lilith’s mind.

Raphael chuckled, his tone still mild. “That’s not a bad idea. Gideon, what do you think?”

He was helping her.

Aria realized it instantly.

Raphael could have easily stayed upstairs and out of it, but he had come down and was taking her side.

Aria felt a surge of gratitude.

“That’s absurd!” Helena declared. “Gideon is, for all intents and purposes, Lilith’s brother-in-law. What would this adoption make them?”

“It would just make the family even closer,” Aria said sweetly.

Since everyone was using Lilith’s illness to make her life miserable, she decided to make things miserable for Lilith and Gideon in return.

As long as the two of them became adoptive siblings, once the divorce was finalized, Lilith wouldn’t be able to marry into the family even if she wanted to.

If Lilith was so desperate to get Aria out of the Evernight family, then she could forget about marrying in herself!

Aria just wanted to provoke Gideon. “Gideon, what do you think?”

Gideon’s gaze was deep and unreadable.

“Grandma is right. Lilith’s position makes it inappropriate. Besides, she treats you like a sister, so naturally, she thinks of me as a brother.”

Aria was certain Gideon was just putting on a show for his grandfather, and she felt a wave of disgust, wanting to pull her hand away.

But Gideon’s grip was tight, and she couldn't break free.
