The Evernights were such natural-born opportunists.
They only cared about you when they needed something.
Aria had seen it all before.
As for the hundred million dollars Aldous mentioned, whether it was true or not, the money never reached her, and she knew nothing about it. If Aldous really wanted to pursue the matter, he should go after the person who took the money, not her.
“Dad, Aria needs to rest. We don’t have a final prognosis for Gideon yet, so please don’t panic,” Raphael said, gently persuading Aldous until he finally managed to escort him out of Aria's room.
The room fell quiet once more.
Aria lay in bed for a while. The anesthetic was wearing off, and the pain was starting to set in. She reached out and activated the pain pump.
Then, she pushed herself up into a sitting position.
She figured she would be in the hospital for a week at most.
Back at the lab, besides monitoring the after-effects of the drug, there was also the matter of the person who had been sneaking in. She still hadn't found them.
The first thing Aria had done after the incident was install her own security camera, a secret known only to Alden Reaves.
Whoever could get into the lab so easily had to be someone she knew.
Aria made a call.
“Professor, it’s me. I’d like you to hold a seminar in my place. The sooner, the better. You can announce that I’ve developed an updated version of the antidote.”
She exchanged a few more words with Alden Reaves. He didn't know what had happened to her but noticed her voice was weak. After a moment of silence, he said, “Don’t worry too much about Gideon. His latest reports are back, and it’s not necessarily a sign of a full-blown relapse.”
“Huh?”
So Alden thought she was worried about Gideon.
She found it almost amusing. “Professor, I’m not worried about Gideon. We’re in the waiting period for our divorce. In a month, he’ll be out of my life.”
