As soon as Gideon spoke, Mira's gossipy mood vanished. The air in the room suddenly turned to ice.
"…Aria, are you with Gideon right now?"
She had met Gideon before, so she recognized his voice.
Aria hummed in affirmation. "Yes, we're together. Is there anything else?"
"No, nothing… Well, uh, my condolences, Mr. Evernight. Bye…"
Mira hung up quickly, cringing so hard she wished the floor would swallow her whole.
Aria put her phone away and looked up at Gideon. "Once the cooling-off period is over, you can attend her funeral in whatever capacity you wish. I won't say another word."
But they weren't divorced yet. What was she supposed to do with her dignity when he acted like this? Once their marriage was exposed, would Gideon even defend her? Lilith was dead; you shouldn't speak ill of the dead. So how could anyone blame Lilith? All the blame would fall on Aria.
Aria spoke calmly, as if discussing a business deal, thinking only of how to minimize the fallout from this incident, without a single trace of the reaction a wife should have.
"Aria, if you ask me to, I'll break the agreement. I'll publicly announce our status. I won't let you suffer any injustice."
Eveline frowned and tugged on Gideon's sleeve. "Aria can't have children anymore. Do you want to watch the Evernight family line die out?"
"Aria may not be able to carry a child, but her eggs are still viable. We can use a surrogate. The Evernight legacy doesn't have to end with us."
Eveline's expression was complicated, but seeing how determined Gideon was, she didn't argue further.
Aria scoffed internally. Did Gideon think a flippant phrase like "only lost her uterus" could erase all the suffering she had endured?
She couldn't do it.
"If you want the suitcase, you can have it."
