Had Gideon lost his mind? She didn't have a uterus. What was she supposed to give birth to?
Raphael read through the medical file, then carefully put it in his pocket. "Aria didn't have a simple abortion at the time. But the fact is, her uterus was damaged because of you. For both emotional and logical reasons, I felt I should help her."
"Emotional and logical reasons? What 'emotional' reasons are yours?"
Gideon snatched Aria's suitcase. "We're not even divorced, and you're already trying to be the other man? What would Grandfather think if he knew you were going after Aria?"
"There is nothing improper between Aria and me."
Gideon laughed, a bitter, angry sound. He was about to retort when he remembered saying the exact same thing to Aria when she had questioned his relationship with Lilith. Hearing those words thrown back at him now, Gideon realized how ridiculous it sounded.
"Gideon, our cooling-off period is almost over. Although I deceived you first, my miscarriage was indeed related to you. Hazel pushed me to the ground that day. Lilith fainted at that moment, and you chose Lilith, didn't you?"
Gideon's tone darkened. "And because of that, you got an abortion?"
Aria found it almost funny. "'Just' that? It's a small thing in your eyes, isn't it? If you had cared about me even a little, you would have asked my doctor what my situation really was. Before I was pregnant, I told you I had problems with my uterus, that I couldn't have children. But you forced me because Lilith needed cord blood… After I got pregnant, do you think I didn't want to keep the baby? I thought I could never be a mother in this life. This child was a surprise, but that doesn't mean I didn't love it. But after that accident, the doctor said if I didn't terminate the pregnancy, I might lose my uterus, and the baby wouldn't survive anyway. I had no choice. As long as my uterus was intact, I could still be a mother someday."
As she spoke, Aria's voice choked up, and she reached up to wipe the tears from the corners of her eyes. "But what a shame, Gideon. Not only could I not save my child, but I lost my uterus too. This is the price I pay for loving you, and I accept it. Now I want to cut my losses. Can't I? I want to divorce you, and we'll go our separate ways. Can't I do that?"
Seeing the redness in Aria's eyes, Gideon felt a sharp pain in his heart. He never imagined things were as Aria described. For a moment, he was at a loss, reaching out to wipe away her tears.
