As Alden spoke, he cast a casual glance toward Flora Keene and added:
"The higher-ups have issued an order. If the offense is severe enough, the culprit can be shot on sight."
Aria blinked in shock. "Really?"
Flora's legs instantly turned to jelly.
How could she have known that Aria's patent was so critical that it could warrant an execution on the spot?
If anyone else had said it, she might have scoffed, but coming from Alden Reaves, it was something she had to seriously weigh.
Flora frantically reached out and grabbed Charles Brent's arm.
"Charles, I swear I only wanted to get justice for Lilith. I made a mistake in a moment of desperation..."
Charles patted her hand, soothing her in a low voice. "It's fine. He's just trying to scare you."
He knew about Aria applying for the patent.
It was a national secret, but the situation was absolutely not as dire as Alden made it out to be.
He knew it, and Aria knew it too.
Alden let out a cold scoff.
Watching Alden treat Aria so well, Ivy couldn't help but clench her fists, instinctively looking toward Raphael.
But Raphael's attention was entirely focused on Aria. He wasn't paying Ivy any mind at all.
Ivy bit her lip, reaching out to tug at Gideon Evernight's coat.
"Gideon, Dr. Reaves has never forgiven me..."
Gideon watched the three of them chatting, the heavy knot of frustration in his chest tightening.
He had heard rumors about what happened back then, but he refused to believe Ivy was that kind of person.
Besides, she was undeniably capable. Over her years abroad, she had participated in numerous high-level research projects that he had personally tracked.
If Alden's relationship with Ivy could be mended, then Aria wouldn't hold such an important place in Alden's eyes anymore.
With that thought, Gideon stepped up to Alden.
