Could one of them really have murdered Lilith in cold blood, just to frame Aria?
Seeing Charles's expression darken, Helena pressed harder.
"What is going on? Is Lilith just going to die without any justice?"
Charles's voice was laced with ice.
"If the police would just drop the case, we'd be lucky."
Since Lilith's death was officially classified as a homicide, the police were legally bound to investigate it to the bitter end. Even if Roxanne wanted to withdraw the charges against Aria, it was no longer up to her.
"But that's the least of our problems right now. We have to come up with fifteen million dollars immediately, or Roxanne is going to prison."
Helena stared at him in disbelief.
"Fifteen million? What are you talking about?"
"I think Roxanne should be the one to explain that."
Under the crushing weight of Charles and Helena's glares, Roxanne finally cracked.
"My company was going under. I needed a massive injection of capital, but Nathan completely refused to help me. I was desperate! That's why I came up with the plan..."
Helena's face tightened in horror. "Are you telling me that the money you gave me back then... didn't come from the Rowans?"
Roxanne nodded miserably.
Helena's breath grew ragged.
She had spent years believing the Rowan family had graciously supported them, believing Roxanne had married into a wonderful life. In reality, it was a living nightmare.
Nathan Rowan had not only refused to help his wife's family, but he had also been busy having an affair while Roxanne was pregnant. He was absolute scum.
"And you've been sharing a bed with that monster for nearly thirty years..."
Roxanne burst into tears. "This is exactly why I didn't tell you! I knew you'd look at me like this!"
Helena looked ready to pass out from the sheer rage.
