When Gideon finally regained consciousness, Aria had already been gone for two hours.
The first thing he heard was the grating sound of Eveline's endless weeping.
Gideon blinked his eyes open, his body feeling as heavy as lead.
"You're awake," Aldous grunted, sounding more exhausted than relieved. "I was starting to think you weren't going to make it."
Gideon's throat felt like sandpaper. He slowly scanned the room, a sharp pang of disappointment hitting him when he realized Aria wasn't there.
"Grandpa... where is Aria?"
"She saved your life and then she left."
She saved him?
A spark of desperate hope flared in Gideon's eyes. "Aria came back to save me?"
Aldous looked at his grandson with absolute disgust.
When they were married, Gideon had treated her like garbage. Now that she was gone, he was acting like a lovesick fool. Who was this pathetic performance for?
"Yes," Aldous snapped coldly. "She saved you, and then she walked out without a second glance. She only saved you because she's a doctor."
"But that means there's still a chance..."
Gideon finally understood the agonizing torment of a bleeding stomach. He tried to push himself up, but his arms trembled and gave out, leaving him helplessly pinned to the mattress.
A horrific realization suddenly washed over him.
When he woke up, he was surrounded by a family who cared about him. But what about Aria?
When she had woken up in the hospital, completely alone, in unimaginable pain—what had he done? He had stormed into her room like a tyrant, completely ignoring her suffering, just to interrogate her about Lilith.
He was a monster.
How could he have been so blind?
"Why did you drink yourself half to death?!" Eveline wailed. "With your status, you could have literally any woman on the planet! Why does it have to be Aria?!"
Because no other woman in the world would ever love him with the unconditional devotion Aria had.
