After All the Hurt, She Chose Herself novel Chapter 3

Eight years ago, when she left the research institute to become Gideon's secretary, her professor, deeply disappointed in her wasted potential, had asked her countless times why she was doing it.

"Don't you realize how many patients will go without treatment because of you?"-

Of course, Aria had her own reasons she couldn't explain.

She turned her back to her professor, wiped away her tears, and left him with a single, cold sentence, "Because medicine doesn't make money."

"I want lots and lots of money."

They parted on bad terms.

Because of that, Aria wasn't sure if her professor would even take her back now.

A moment later, a reply came: [This isn't a place you can just come and go as you please.]

Rejection was to be expected.

But then another message followed immediately.

[However, I will be attending a medical conference next month.]

Aria understood. Her professor was giving her a way back in.

To re-establish her connection with him, she had to attend that conference as well.

[Okay, thank you, Professor. I'll see you then.]

Her professor didn't tell her the specific time or content of the conference. He wanted her to find it herself, to test her ability and sincerity.

After all these years working with Gideon, Aria hadn't completely given up on medicine.

She messaged her assistant, asking them to compile information on all the medical conferences her professor was involved in.

Given her professor's status as a titan in the medical field, it wouldn't be hard to find. She just needed to understand his current research focus and prepare in advance.

This time, she couldn't afford any mistakes.

Being beautiful and competent meant nothing. If the boss didn't like you, you were doomed.

Looking at Henry's smug face, Aria felt nauseated.

Her marriage to Gideon was a secret; no one in the company knew about their relationship. No wonder Henry was getting so bold.

Aria glanced at her watch. "Being four minutes late counts as being absent?"

In the past, she felt it wasn't worth making things ugly with a colleague. Now that she was preparing to resign, she had no intention of tolerating it.

Henry sneered, "Absent is absent. What's with all the excuses? If you have a problem, take it up with Mr. Evernight. If you can't accept it, then quit."

Gideon's secretaries had different responsibilities, and Henry was in charge of the finance department. As long as it didn't reach Gideon, Henry acted without fear.

Besides, he was sure Aria wouldn't make a scene.

Everyone knew how Aria would do anything for a single word from Mr. Evernight, but all her sucking up only seemed to annoy him more.
