"When Roxanne extorted this money, it was supposed to be a bridal gift for you. My grandfather paid it because you were marrying me. Now Raphael is wiring you money? Are you planning to marry my uncle the second our divorce is finalized?"
Aria's expression turned glacial. "We both know the truth about that money. As for why Raphael sent it to me, that is between him and me. We are divorced. This is none of your business."
Dr. Reaves had no children of his own. Although he worked at the Flourish Research Institute funded by the Evernight family, he was essentially an elder to them. Now that he was unwell, the Evernight family stepping up to support him was perfectly reasonable. But Aria had no intention of explaining that to Gideon. Dr. Reaves was keeping his illness a secret on purpose, and Aria respected his wishes.
Confined to his hospital bed, Gideon took a sharp breath. "Aria, I don't mean anything by it. But it looks highly inappropriate to outsiders."
"Outsiders? If neither of us talks, who's going to know?" Aria shifted her gaze to Roxanne, speaking with deliberate precision. "If word of this leaks, regardless of who did it, I will assume it was you."
Roxanne's face darkened, but she quickly masked it with a sneer. "Aria, do you actually think the Evernight family has your back? You're just a lowly researcher!"
Project GJ101 was highly classified—even Gideon knew nothing about it. It made sense that Roxanne thought Aria was a nobody.
Aria let out a contemptuous laugh. "Is that so? Then why don't you test that theory? Let's see if the Evernight family sits by while their savior is threatened."
Roxanne looked confused. "Savior?"
