Charles meant exactly what he said. He immediately ordered the estate staff to pack up Harold's family's belongings and throw them out.
—
"Are you planning to partner with Charles?"
Raphael set a plate of steaming BBQ ribs on the table, handed Aria a fork, and asked casually,
"Have you thought it over?"
The rich aroma of the food made Aria's stomach rumble. She dug in immediately.
"I don't even know what his projects are. I'm not sure if I'm going to take the deal."
Aria was nothing if not professional. If she agreed to a business meeting, she would treat it strictly as business. If the projects were profitable, she wouldn't let personal history stop her.
Besides, her corporate duties would end in a week, cutting off any business ties with Charles anyway.
Also, if Charles was pivoting fully into corporate management, he would have to resign from the Flourish Research Institute. He couldn't split his focus between the two.
Once the clinical trials began, she probably wouldn't see him around the labs much either.
Raphael nodded, looking pleased by her healthy appetite, which in turn made him hungry. "As long as you know what you're doing."
Mid-bite, a random thought popped into Aria's head.
"Thank you for getting back at Graham for me today."
"You don't need to thank me," Raphael replied softly. "Between us, you never have to say thank you."
Aria didn't push the polite formalities. She just hummed in agreement and speared another rib.
"You came to see me today—did you take the day off?"
Since returning to the country, Raphael had been working at the Evernight Group.
It was no wonder Eveline was feeling so threatened. With Aldous recovering at home, Raphael had been the one pulling the strings at the conglomerate.
"Things are stable. There wasn't much on my desk today."
The Evernight Group was an absolute monopoly. Its operations ran like a well-oiled machine, so skipping work for a day didn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
After dinner, Aria went to clear the plates, but Raphael beat her to it. He pressed her gently back into her chair and handed her a bowl of freshly washed fruit.
