As she was leaving the institute, Aria happened to see Flora arriving with her arm linked through Charles’s.
Aria had intended to avoid them, but Flora had already moved to block her path.
“What are you doing here?”
Charles’s eyes were heavy as he stared at Aria.
Flora looked at her with contempt.
It was because of Aria that Lilith had suffered so much. If she had just admitted the misdiagnosis earlier, if she had even an ounce of conscience, she shouldn’t be showing her face in front of them.
And yet yesterday, she was getting tangled up with Charles again.
“None of your business.”
Aria sidestepped, trying to leave quickly.
She needed to get home and reorganize her materials. With the conference tomorrow, she wanted everything to be perfect.
“Charles, look at her! She still doesn’t think she did anything wrong!”
Charles’s mind was on the twenty million dollars Roxanne had mentioned, and he stared at Aria, momentarily lost in thought.
Flora’s voice brought him back. “Let’s not waste our time on her.”
Noticing Charles’s distraction, Flora bit her lip. “It’s just that whenever I think of Lilith, my heart aches…”
Her voice trembled as she spoke. “Do you think Dr. Reaves will really agree to our plan?”
Aria rolled her eyes at Flora. All that whimpering was getting on her nerves.
What was the point of playing the innocent victim in front of Charles?
She turned and walked away.
Watching Aria’s confident departure, Charles felt a flicker of distraction before pulling Flora into his arms.
“Making Lilith a test subject is the only way she can get the medication.”
Without further delay, the two went to Alden Reaves’s office.
Charles handed Lilith’s medical records to Alden.
“Dr. Reaves, these are Lilith’s records. She’s in the early stages of cancer, which makes her a perfect candidate for our experimental drug study.”
After all, scientific research burned through money.
“Dr. Reaves, Lilith’s central nervous system is also damaged, similar to my own condition. If she can recover, it would give me a little more hope as well.”
Alden’s gaze fell on Charles’s right hand.
His condition was much more severe than Lilith’s.
Since Charles had put it that way, Alden couldn’t refuse.
“Alright. But I will only be responsible for approving the drug. I will not interfere with how you choose to administer the treatment.”
“I understand. Thank you, Dr. Reaves.”
Alden’s meaning was clear: he would provide the drug but no treatment plan, leaving Charles fully responsible. If anything happened, the institute would not be involved.
But Charles had no other choice. He had to agree.
With the approval secured, Charles immediately applied for the most advanced neuro-restorative drug.
When he drove back to Lilith’s hospital room, she was still in a great deal of discomfort.
