Aria went to the hospital with Gideon.
Lilith, rail-thin in a blue and white hospital gown, was curled up in Flora’s arms, drenched in sweat. She looked utterly pitiful.
“Is this what you wanted to see?”
They stood at the doorway, not going in.
“Flora, it hurts so much… When is Charles bringing back the medicine? It hurts, it hurts so much…”
Hearing the weak voice from inside, Gideon’s expression filled with pain.
But to Aria, it didn't sound like pain. It sounded more like symptoms of addiction.
The body's instinctive anxiety and agony from withdrawal—a feeling Lilith was mistaking for physical pain.
“A sedative would be enough to calm her down.”
“A sedative?” Gideon repeated. “What are you playing at?”
“It's just treating the symptoms.”
What she needed most right now was to have her mood stabilized. A sedative was also a nerve-numbing drug, and Lilith wouldn't have an adverse reaction to it.
“A quarter of a dose would be enough to get her through the night.”
Aria glanced at Lilith in the hospital room again and came to a conclusion. “Lilith isn't suitable for the clinical trial. So, even if I restart it, she can't be a participant.”
“Mr. Evernight, I knew I'd find you here!”
As they were talking, Henry approached, holding a folder.
When he saw Aria was there too, he instinctively tried to hide the file in his hand.
In it was Aria’s medical report from her checkup at the hospital yesterday.
Upon seeing that Aria was pregnant, Henry was in disbelief. Only after repeatedly confirming with the doctor did he have to accept the reality.
A woman Gideon disliked was actually pregnant.
If she actually gave birth to the child, then his years of targeting Aria…
Seeing Aria's strong reaction, Gideon had a feeling that there was something in the report she didn't want him to know.
He prepared to open it.
“Gideon! Get in here, quick!” Flora heard the voices outside and threw the door open. “Something's wrong with Lilith! I've been calling Charles, but he's not picking up!”
Gideon's hand, about to open the folder, paused. He went straight into the hospital room.
Aria, wanting the folder in his hand, followed him inside.
Seeing Aria there too, Flora felt a lump form in her throat.
“What are you doing here?”
She didn't know yet that Hazel's project had been stopped, but she had a vague feeling that the forced recall of the drug had something to do with Aria.
“Gideon, it hurts so much. When is Charles coming back? It hurts… I feel awful… I need the medicine. Without it, I'm not going to make it…”
Lilith gripped Gideon’s arm tightly, beads of sweat soaking the stray hairs on her forehead.
