Jennifer hadn’t just called Isabella. She actually showed up at The Adams Group to see Ethan in person.

When she arrived, Ethan had just stepped out of a meeting. His assistant came over and let him know, “Mrs. Adams is here.”

“Mrs. Adams?” For a second, Ethan thought Isabella was back again. Then he paused and asked, “You mean my mother?”

“Yes, sir.”

Ethan didn’t say anything else. His face turned serious as he walked back to his office.

Jennifer was sitting on the couch in the reception area with Sophia. Jennifer was flipping through a newspaper, and Sophia was tapping away at a game on her phone. On the coffee table in front of them sat two cups of coffee, plus a plate of fruit and a few pastries.

As soon as Sophia saw Ethan coming, she quickly closed her game and tucked her phone into her Hermès bag. She knew Ethan hated seeing her play games all the time.

“Ethan, you’re back from your meeting,” Sophia called out, standing up.

Jennifer kept reading, only looking up when Ethan was right in front of her.

Ethan looked every bit the part of a successful man—tall, handsome, and confident. He was barely thirty and already running the family business, with a personal fortune well into the billions. How could someone like him have ended up with Isabella?

On paper, Isabella was a Lane. But everyone knew she was just the extra baggage Cynthia brought into the family. She was born with the last name George and only changed it later. The Lane family never really accepted her. She had zero status in the family, and the family fortune was completely out of her reach.

Ethan’s voice was calm but distant. “I’m a little tired. I’ve still got a cold that won’t go away.”

With the cold lingering and his workload piling up, it was no wonder he was exhausted. Isabella had made him drink some bitter herbal tea, and his fever had gone down, but he still felt wiped out.

Honestly, he probably should have stayed home to rest. But with Isabella not looking after him and the house feeling empty, he chose to come to work as usual. At his level, unless he was completely out of commission, he had to show up. His schedule was jam-packed with things only he could handle.

“You have a cold? How did that happen?” Jennifer’s worry was immediate.

“Did you see a doctor? What did they say? Does Isabella even know you’re sick?”
