After I Stopped Loving Him novel Chapter 33

Isabella stopped and glanced back at him. For a moment, she hesitated, then said softly, “About last night... I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gone into your room.”

“I just thought you’d had too much to drink and might get sick, so I followed to check on you. Susan told me you always just fall asleep when you’re drunk and don’t need anyone, so I left right away.”

“Don’t worry. Since your room’s off-limits to me, I promise I won’t ever step foot in there again.”

In their last life together, they’d been married for three years but always slept in separate rooms. His bedroom really was forbidden territory for her.

“Don’t let it happen again.”

“Alright.”

Isabella turned and headed out. Ethan wanted to say something more, but she didn’t even look back. He watched her walk away, the words stuck in his throat.

His phone rang. He glanced at the screen—Jennifer. He answered, already feeling a headache coming on.

“Mom, what’s up?”

Jennifer sounded skeptical. “That’s not what it looked like. Before the wedding, Isabella was always looking up different places and hotels. She was clearly excited about the trip.”

In their past life, they had gone on a honeymoon, but it was a disaster. They barely made it through one city before coming home early, fighting every day about Natalie. After that, Ethan dove into work and barely spoke to Isabella. No matter how kind she was, he just ignored her. He stopped drinking the soups she made for him. Any gifts she gave ended up in the trash. The colder he got, the more she hated Natalie, and the more she acted out, the more Ethan couldn’t stand her.

“She was looking forward to it, but she’s being really considerate. Mom, if there’s nothing else, I’m going to hang up. I drank too much last night and my head’s killing me. I haven’t even eaten yet. I’m starving.”

Jennifer’s voice softened immediately. “It’s this late and you haven’t even had breakfast? What’s Isabella doing? If your head hurts, tell her to make you some honey water. And you really need to cut back on the drinking. If you take Isabella out for business, just let her drink for you. She doesn’t understand your work anyway, so the least she can do is help you out with that.”
