The Byron family didn’t even have two hundred million. There was no way Olivia could come up with that kind of money.
“Hey, hey, don’t drag Ms. Clark into this. She already said she’s just your sister. She doesn’t have those kinds of feelings for you.”
Isabella trusted Mia Clark. Mia always held her head high, proud and dignified. She’d never be the other woman.
“Is it my mom?” Ethan finally wondered out loud.
It made sense. Mia Clark was back, and Jennifer adored her. Maybe Jennifer wanted Mia to replace Isabella, so she offered Isabella two hundred million to walk away. That was exactly the kind of thing Jennifer would do. She could pull together that kind of money without blinking, while someone else might offer a few tens of millions at best.
The idea that Isabella might really leave him for money left Ethan feeling empty. Did she really not love him anymore?
He’d promised her forever, said they could actually be a real couple, have kids, build a life together. Lately, he’d hardly even thought about Natalie. Frank’s advice had finally sunk in after all this time. Maybe it was finally time to let Natalie go. She was with Jordan now, and hanging on to his old feelings would just mess things up for everyone. It would hurt Jordan’s marriage and ruin his own with Isabella.
Isabella was his wife. What kind of fool treated someone else’s wife better than his own? He’d married Isabella, and he wasn’t planning to leave her. If he wanted this to work, he had to step up—love her, take care of her, win her back. That was the only way they could actually grow old together.
Isabella just looked at him, quiet, eyes unreadable. He could tell she wasn’t going to hide anything. She didn’t have to say a word. He got the message.
Isabella slid into Ethan’s car, while Cynthia and Laura took another. On the drive, Isabella’s voice was soft. “Ethan, can we talk tonight?”
“There’s nothing to talk about. I’ve said everything already,” he answered, his mind already on the confrontation at the Adams Estate.
“You don’t have to fight your mom for me. It’s normal if she doesn’t like me. And honestly, I don’t love you anymore, either. Maybe it’s best if we just split up,” she said, sounding tired. “I don’t want this to get so ugly that we end up hating each other.”
In her last life, that’s exactly what happened. They fought until they were like enemies. Her heart finally broke, and she asked for a divorce. He let her go, but even then, she couldn’t escape her unhappy ending.
