Natalie reached over and gave his waist a sharp pinch.
“Jordan, if you say one more thing like that, I’m going to get mad. If I really cared about wedding gifts, I wouldn’t have married you in the first place. Whatever you give me makes me happy, and what you gave was already more than enough. Our family isn’t the Adams family, so why bother comparing?”
Her voice softened as she turned to face him.
“Jordan, I love you. Only you. Ethan is just an old friend, someone I grew up with. There’s never been anything romantic between us. If I did have feelings for him, why would I ever marry you? Isabella’s just trying to stir things up. She wants us to fight because her own marriage is a mess. She can’t stand to see us happy.”
Jordan bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
“Hearing you say that makes me feel better, babe. I just… I always worry that I can’t give you the best.”
She smiled at him.
“You already have. I’m not greedy. All I want is to grow old with you, maybe have a couple of kids. That’s my idea of happiness.” But as soon as she mentioned children, her smile faded. “Our baby…”
Jordan pulled her close, his voice soft and reassuring.
“It’s okay, sweetheart. We’re still young. We can try again. That baby just wasn’t meant to be with us.” The pain of their loss lingered between them. After the miscarriage, the doctor told them Natalie needed time to recover before they tried again. Jordan had started quitting smoking and drinking, getting ready for when the time was right.
Natalie let out a shaky breath.
“And Isabella’s wedding gifts…”
