Jordan and Natalie didn’t say a word. Ethan told his people to take everything downstairs.
About thirty minutes later, Ethan and Isabella left the Lane Estate. Cynthia thought about going with them, but Jackson stopped her. He said they needed to talk about the divorce, so she stayed behind.
Natalie’s parents were so humiliated by her actions that they couldn’t stick around. They left in a hurry, dragging Natalie home to the Gates family, promising to set her straight. Jordan went along with them.
In less than an hour, the huge living room was empty except for Jackson and Cynthia.
Jackson poured himself a glass of water, then turned to Cynthia and asked if she wanted anything.
“No, thanks. If I get thirsty, I’ll get it myself.”
He sat down across from her on the sofa, watching her quietly. Twenty years hadn’t really changed her. She was still beautiful, poised, and graceful, at least to him. Honestly, Cynthia was even prettier than Deborah. But Deborah was younger, so full of life, and loved him with everything she had. They had a son together, too.
Cynthia had done everything a wife was supposed to do over their twenty years. He’d never had to worry about the house or the family; she handled it all. Still, he always felt like she didn’t truly love him. Their marriage was more about convenience than passion. Deep down, he figured her heart still belonged to her late husband. Competing with a dead man wasn’t something he cared to do. And, honestly, the place his first wife held in his heart was something neither Cynthia nor Deborah could ever reach.
He finally broke the silence. “Cynthia, can’t you forgive me? If you can, we could just keep living like nothing happened.”
