Jesse flashed a smile. “Honestly, all I did was point them in the right direction when the right job came up. The Charles family did the rest. They have a solid reputation, and people trust them. That’s why they landed the deal.”
“It was just a little advice. No big deal.”
He never used his connections or status to pressure anyone into working with the Charles family. Their success was their own. In the end, it all came down to their abilities. If they hadn’t been up to the task, it wouldn’t have mattered how much he wanted to help. They still wouldn’t have made it.
Ethan seemed to drift off in thought, not saying anything more.
The door to the hospital room swung open.
Barbara stepped out.
She spotted the three men huddled at the end of the hallway and walked over. “Ethan, let’s head home. Laura said she’ll stay with Isabella for now.”
Barbara and Isabella weren’t especially close, and Barbara had her own life to juggle. It wasn’t realistic for her to stick around the hospital, and Isabella would never have asked her to.
Harold nodded at Ethan. “We’ll get going. If you need anything, just say the word.”
After Harold and Barbara left, Ethan and Jesse went back into the room.
Isabella was sitting up, crunching on an apple. When she saw them come in, she spoke to Ethan without missing a beat. “You should go home and get some rest, Ethan. Laura’s here with me. Once my mom shows up, she’ll head home.”
Ethan looked wiped out. More than anything, he wanted to go home and talk to his grandma, maybe get some advice on how to fix things with Isabella.
He turned to Laura, grateful. “Laura, thank you for staying.”
